I've always had this problem OP. Its why I can no longer visit the local subway, mcdonalds, or liquor stores.
I mostly shop in Walmart since its a very large store with many different cashiers with high turnover.
I've avoided this at the gun stores and ranges by just driving out of the county to visit other stores to buy what I need, and never returning. Its a good thing that I don't need to buy things from there often.
