Scene is really really really late 2000s fashion/culture. I'm glad that I it was just before my time, not that my own early-2000s mallgoth nu-metal ironic-punk thing was any better probably..

I miss the fact that the 2000s, and actually the last couple of decades before that, all had a real alternative mainstream culture.

The 2000s had "scene", the late 90s and early 2000s had my aforementioned nu-metal thing as well as pop-punk, early 90s had alt rock and grunge as well as gangster rap, 80s had metal, etc.

Senpai that album carried me through my mid teens. Since we didn't have the internet (or even a home computer at the time), and just the one TV in the living, I would lay on my bed and listen to every single song while reading the lyrics booklet. While that MISTER HAAAAAAHN song played I would look at the art and read the "thank yous".

It's too bad that most of the big names from that era got turned into memes through youtube and whatever else.

nothing really, or at least nothing as cohesive as the previous decades.

You have a small metal scene, you have a small goth scene, you have a small punk scene, you have a small goth scene, you have a small "scene" scene still, etc. It's like a sample platter of previous mainstream alternative cultures.

Dubstep and EDM was pretty alternative in the 2000s, but that also went full mainstream with David Guetta and Tiesto and Skrillex and everyone else.

They actually sot of did. "Hipsters specifically refers to a group of people from a specific part of New York City, but generally it doe also refer to any sort of ugly-sweater-wearing vynil-record-listening oversized-glasses-wearing dumpster-diving freegan. but yeah actually weeaboos are a major thing, and now that I think of it, the whole "nerd" culture.

Whether you're just someone who's an attractive normie and gets played to cosplay as Lara Croft or Kratos at Comic Con or e3 or something, or you're a full blown Brony autist and a card-carrying member of gater-gate, or someone in the middle, the whole nerd thing is pretty much the mainstream alternative culture.

1. No. I took a few years off between high school and college so I was 21-22 while everyone else was 17-18, and there was a whole bunch of them that sat on the floor and underneath stairs as their usually hangout spots.

2. That's what most if not all counter-cultures have been since the 70s, and it was also based on emo/screamo/metalcore music.

This is one of the things that really fucking hurts me. I really wish i could go back in time to live those years as a teen/adolescent. Meh, none of that is particularly accurate. I live in an area infested with socially 'progressive' soft males and the thing is, most of them are confident and get laid pretty often. They fit securely into a socially acceptable category and they are confident about it, which means they can still attract women. They lack masculinity, sure, but their material success and willingness to commit to an identity still make them attractive enough to get women and be generally respected.

The numale who is lonely and who orbits women is not a numale; that's just a beta male. The numale is more like the tech bro or the feminist: socially literate, materially well-off, lacking genuine human qualities, but still more engaged in human life than your average robot or beta.

Funny you say that. I also learned HTML so customize my MySpace.

Seriously, I think MySpace alone taught thousands of teens how to code by trying to customize pages.

I thought FB having no customization was a godsend, but it also made everything pretty sterile in a way.

I do miss the personalized stuff from MySpace. Like all those polls about whats your favorite movie, favorite band, etc. and just put them on your page for the hell of it.. It seems it was easier to meet strangers there too compared to FB.

Grass is always greener. I will admit that the overall culture was probably better, but the advances in technology and everything is mroe than a good trade-off. All the music that I listened to and the TV shows I watched and movies I went to, we can download those in a few seconds/minutes and not even pay for it if we don't feel like it or can't.

Also, I like how pulling out my phone is a free "get out of any awkward social situation" card, where I pretend to read a text from someone.

And yes, "binge watching" things have become a social accepted thing.

I still can't get over the words "binge watching" or "Selfie", they both leave a very bad taste in my mouth, maybe because they are both horrible properties of the smartphone culture which is rampant today.

I think the worst thing about this decade is how no one wants to do anything themselves, with the popularity of shit like Let's Play and Twitch they would all just use those for highlights rather than play games or watch movies own their own, forming their own opinion. I also think people can't take criticism much anymore, even if you analyze some piece carefully or fully back it up with actual sources people always dismiss you as a troll which is fucking annoying.

The funny thing about the internet is that it can open you up to many diverse people from all kinds of backgrounds, all with different opinions and ways of thinking. But it can also let people go into their little safe space hugboxes. Interact with nothing but people that think just like them and shut off everyone else. This leads to people getting "triggered" about anything not resembling their own opinions.

4chan can be very diverse, but then boards like /r9k/ are hugboxes in a way.. Everyone here hates women, and if anyone says otherwise they're either trolls, cucks or roasties and their opinions are dismissed.

>Politics are dominated by loud, visible attention whores with brightly-dyed hair screaming whatever provocative message will make people pay attention to them. Literally go around starting shit with people minding their own business in case someone from their scene is around to admire their "heroism"
>Movies have adapted to the desensitization and devaluation of attention by making action and controversy the focal draw of each presentation. Action, as in replacing story-telling with a constant underwhelming climax. Controversy, as in promoting your shitty movie by advertising on Facebook that you've changed a race/gender that's integral to a character and riding the "no such thing a bad publicity" wave. It got people talking about something as bland and tasteless as Cheerios, and that success coupled with many others have made this a formula.
>Sex is all about the attention. Nobody cares about sex anymore. Only the social value it brings and the risk of losing social value for abstaining from sexuality. What women get off to is getting 600 likes for showing their attention tits on social media. What men get off on is being one of the 5 or so suitors she blesses with acknowledgement.

I love the internet as much as the next person but all these "population crises" and other social ills could probably be solved if the internet vanished and everyone found themselves taken own a notch.

disney stars turning slut was a lot more shocking then, because it hadn't been done yet.

britney as a catholic slut is equivalent to t swift (blessed be) doing a DP scene

>tfw normies ruined gym culture
>it used to be a place to workout and get away from the world for a couple of hours
>the girls dressed less slutty and where friendly
>the guys didn't bring loud music and stand around looking at their Faceberg accounts
>it wasn't commercialized as it is now
>it wasn't normalized as it is now
>people just stand around seeing who could talk the loudest now
what went wrong?

britney wasnt as slutty as the girls nowadays man haha. On those times, everyone called her a slut, but compared to women today the things that she made where so little.

This is a photo of the ideal women standard of this era (girl in hotline bling video) Looks like a total skank

Kinda glad I didn't, but still regret it, seeing as the opportunity is forever lost.

Alt girls were legit crazy. From punk to scene and everything along the way I'm sure maybe one in five was worth the immense trouble.

My first crush was a qt scene girl back in 08

I didn't care for emos or whatever but she was really nice to me. Old /b/ gave me tips on asking girls out so we texted all night and planned for the weekend.

Here comes the traumatizing part, on thursday she texts me canceling our date for saturday without reason, she wouldn't reply back. Saturday comes and I still haven't heard back ( nor did her other friend I knew ). Unknown # ( her bff ) calls at 1am crying the crazy ex-bf mangled her into the hospital.

She died 4 days later from brain injuries. I never got the chance to confess my love, had a nervous breakdown and unleashed my inner school schooter on a chad that singled me out since elementary school landing him in the hospital.

At the time I thought I was being punished for feeling happy.

i remember being afraid of the "newfag" moniker.

i knew what 4chan was as a "kid", but i was too scared to use it, then once i realised that was bullshit, people didn't actually use tor to browse, i didn't want to leave my own forum and learn a new one...and then i finally got stuck here. this was 2009...late for 4chan...but the current users were still in elementary school. fuck me.

What impact did the spread of social media have on society, do you guys think?

Ten years ago I remember my computer science teacher making a big deal out of myspace having more users than some small countries, and now the numbers have ballooned into the billions for FB. Even sites like Snapchat have exploded into the mainstream.

so much this, dude.

I started going to the gym back in the late 90s. It was its own little world. I went to school with the gym owner's son, so I'd work out with him, even though we didn't hang out outside of the gym. I'd also train with his gf, she'd spot me and stuff, and I'd talk to the owner and shoot the shit with her. No one was sitting on a bench on a smart phone.

Fast forward to today - it's all girls taking selfies in the squat rack, and dudes taking ab selfies while standing in front of and blocking all the free weights.
