I also have a BS, but didn't get much out of my formal studies since it was a pretty outdated program. Most of my most marketable skills were developed within an extracurricular context (hobbies, internship, etc).
Coursework (or some equivalent study) in data structures, algorithms, and optimization are the bare minimum you'll need. You'll just need way more practical experience to show for the lack of formal education. Be prepared to learn how to network too, it helps a ton though it's not absolutely necessary.
Startups can be desperate for talent, so they're your best shot for getting your foot in the door and are more forgiving about a lack of formal education if you have skills to make up for it.
Not sure whether they care about age, though companies with ample benefits tend to favor younger employees (but that could mean anything from under 30 to under 40), and as the old giants (e.g., Intel) fall on hard times financially they tend to screw over older employees.
