In the eternal struggle between edgelords and normies, what is today's edgelord music? What is the modern incarnation of rock that's popular among the edgy masses?

I graduated back in 2010. From what I can recall, screamo and metal was the edgy music of choice.

Dubstep maybe?

Hmm you might be right, even though it's pretty normie.

Ironic Memecore and EDM.
>>
metalcore / deatchcore vs. Pop again

I remember that it was pretty hip for local bands to become deathcore / screamo whatever and that normies listened to rihana

Any EDM and hip hop for normies

ok i think I'm convinced, i guess indie is the modern edgelord music

hows this look?
>>
>>27925773
Vaporwave/hipster stuff for edgelords.

EDM and Top40 for normies.
>>
Normies: Dubstep/electronic pop
Edgelords: Indie music
>>
>>27926253
Indie is normie shit pal, you're fairly wrong
>>
>>27926257
Please dont lump us together with those memelords.
>>
5 years ago indie was normie but EDM/dubstep was for neckbeards. What changed?
>>
>>27926347
Indie is still normie and it's always been terrible in general
>>
Probably some shit like Industrial or post-punk.

But then that's socially acceptable to normie hipsters.
Either way, normies would be EDM or house.
>>
>>27926347
indie was always edgy music,

usually played in those weird edgy movies that normies just don't "get", gnomesayin?

But the question is how popular it is today, because indie was popular in the 2000s, i don't know if it still is today?

I am a total edgelord and I listen to noise /mu/ and power electronics

but they have been around before most posters on this board were born

this e.g. is my favorite song in the world

>>
>>27925773
I think now days the edge Lord music had died off completely. The only thing that's remotely edgy is some rap music but even rap has transitioned away from gang bang lyrics of the past.

I myself only really listen to old rock and electronic music new retro wave etc.
>>
>>27926395
>normies would be EDM or house
"EDM" is mostly a marketing term. It doesn't really mean anything.

House and dubstep are definitely normie. Techno and DnB are closer to the edgelord side. Trance is somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>27926474
House has been the normie choice of dance music since it stopped being played exclusively at gay bars.

If we're talking about edgelord "EDM", it'd have to be hardstyle, or hardcore. Definitely.

>>27926474
Skrillex is basically the death metal of electronic music.

Was Nirvana really edgelord music of the 90s
>>
>>27926575
>turbo normie music
>the death metal of electronic music

Skrillex is the reason dubshit is popular with normies. Having a dumbass haircut doesn't qualify you as an edgy music artist.
>>
>>27926606
Not really. Rage Against the Machine were the true 90s edgelord group.
>>
>>27926606
I'd actually argue it was gothic rock that was the edgy music back in the 90's.
>>
>>27926606
Nirvana was fucking gay. I even grew up in the 90s and fucking hated them. Me and my friends use to joke about how depressed Cobain sounded and how he should just end himself. The. When he actually did it we all had a laugh about it.

Back then I was into more skater punk music than anything. Greenday (before they got all political) rancid, weezer, NOFX etc etc.
>>
>>27925773
I don't understand what you mean by edgelord but probably

Blood on the dance floor and Bring me the horizon and stuff like that. Screamo and metal is still for edgelords.

The new "edgy" really is the much hated tumblr and meme feminist look. Think Dr Martens boots, oversized bomber or denim jacket, multicolered dyed hair, peirced septum and listening to a mix of indie and vaporwave and re-discovering older bands (Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, etc.). Claire Boucher (aka Grimes) really is a good example of that, and her music appeals to that crowd too (although I really like what she makes).

As for guys it's mostly the same thing as listed before, but think undercut hair or top-knot and the man bun. Goth Ninja fashion would count in the edgy, especially the more toned-down version we're slowly seeing in mainstream fashion. Also, ketamine usage.

It's like a clusterfuck between punk and indie, mixed with a "digital" twist.

>>
>>27926727
The name "EDM" was invented by marketing shills to appeal to normies. Original fans of electronic dance music just called it "dance".

And dubstep is 100% normie. It's basically slowed down DnB, and slower = normier.
>>
>>27926720
what's incorrect m80m8?

>And dubstep is 100% normie. It's basically slowed down DnB, and slower = normier.

Please don't talk about things you have no idea about.
>>
>>27926859
Dubstep never became truly normie unlike house or trance. Dubstep is too heavy, hard and technical sounding to normalfags unless its specifically made to be lighter and more cheerful like pop dubstep remixes or chillstep. The latter two are the only dubstep types that appeal to normies. Even skrillexe's crap is compared by 90% of normies to "two robots fucking"
>>
>>27926792
WTF is that? Happy sounding synths starting at 1:29, this is not even slightly "dark".

This is the kind of DnB I used to listen to, and it was definitely edgelord:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Sw0JJNjIN4
>>
>>27926859
Electronic dance music was great before "EDM" shit ruined the scene. You thought top 40s music was repetitive and uncreative? Holy fuck the entire genre can be summed up as Martin Garrix - Animals. Fuck sakes, talentless hacks, all of them.

I love electronic music but I'm pretty much done with electronic dance music. Hopefully IDM and breakcore doesn't become a race for making a quick buck off mindless normans.
>>
Everyone is an effeminate faggot so there is no true edgy meme music for this era

Edgelords: Anything obscure as fuck
>>
>>27926925
Dubstep never became mainstream but Brostep certainly did, normalfags love that shit.

>>27926961
That particular set isn't even that dark and is the sort stuff people used to listen to when D&B was mainstream, the most edgey sub-genre of D&B is definitely darkstep and not many people listen to that.

You should probably listen to more stuff if you think this.

Sure, it's "harsh", but it's lacking that feeling of potential violence which is so important for edgelords. You can be sure most of the crowd at that event I posted think they're badass and a fight might kick off any moment (they aren't, and it won't, but they think it might).
>>
>>27927092
That's part of the reason why you are here.

Dubstep is literally the most normie music there is.

>yo bro that drop wuz sick pass me a natty lite bro

Normies that want to pretend they aren't normies actually go out and pay to watch someone press a button to play album.

Why do people have to classify music as edgy or normie or whatever

Can't I listen to it because I think it's catchy or something

I'm just tired of the 4 to the floor to be quite honest. Hardstyle/hardcore/gabber used to be my go to, but that has sort of become pussified to attract normies with dumb anthems.

I don't really listen to any Gabber or Hardcore that isn't from the 90s anymore desu, was never massively into Hardstyle but I occasionally listen to some of it that the Japs make. Same with Psy-Trance but not into that either. My main genres are Breakbeat Hardcore (which is dead), Jungle (which is mostly dead), Drum & Bass (which is alive but not great on the whole), UK Garage (which is dead) and Grime (which I wish was dead).

Metalcore probably.

There were two emo kids at my highschool that I graduated from a couple of years ago, both of them were neck deep into bands like Asking Alexandria and As I lay dying.

In that case, probably pop punk / emo / garage rock usually lumped into "indie"

In the US today the only publicly visible """"subculture""""" is the thrift store-core/*listens to Mac Demarco once*-core, pic related

I use the """""s because in today's internet-based society, subcultures skip the initial phase of being ostracized and often feared by the mainstream, and go straight into the commodified, publicly available phase.

wasn't darkwave more of a 80s thing, dungeon synth more of a now thing, and neofolk more of a pleb thing?

UK can be edgelord having whatever bracket emo revival, hardcore, pop punk, shoegaze, grunge revival, math rock, post-rock, mathcore, etc. come under.

Normie can be house music, i.e. deep house, big room house, tech house, tropical house, future house, bass house, uk garage, uk house, etc.
