>>
Probably when anonimity was no longer important.

Back then the general concensus was that you should NEVER put personal information on the internet. Websites would only allow nicknames.

Now you can barely do anything without an email and facebook. You are actually forced to use your real name on youtube now.

2007 is when the internet died.
>>
>>27881358
It became mainstream.

SJWs, Jews, the government, none of them would've ever tainted it if the normies hadn't started flocking to it.

Yeah, it's better this way. You only dislike it because you are a bitter virgin that fails with social interaction when people know what you're like.

No, not at all. The internet is not the real world so there is no need to know your real name on the internet.
The internet was completely fine before 2007. And then they tried to fix something that wasnt broken.

Its also amusing that youre calling me names while youre on an anonymous imageboard yourself. Do you even realise how stupid you sound when you hate on an anonymous culture while youre on an anonymous imageboard yourself?
Your post screams reddit. Fuck off faggot.

Nothing happened to the internet, it's just become a more accurate representation of the collective insanity of the human race since it's much more accessible now.

>>
Until about 2007/2008, the internet was essentially a world in and of itself.

In the modern day, the internet is now simply an extension of the real world. The main uses of the internet now are to augment reality. So Facebook/Twitter/Instagram make real life communication "easier", give it another layer of depth, etc.

What robots don't realise is that this transformation has fucked up real life too. In 2006, for instance, "normies" were people who went to parties and hung out with friends in person, rather than sitting inside on the internet. In 2016, "normies" are people who pretend to hang out with their friends, but are actually spending 90% of the time texting and taking fucking selfies.

The result is everything is now boring. The internet is inane and stupid, and now you can't even escape it in real life because of smartphones. Plus normies are increasingly giving up socialisation in favour of "Netflix and chill xxxDDD". So if you don't enjoy shitty "memes" and Facebook humour, you're literally screwed now. Even 4chan has given into it a little bit.
>>

I say that because, usually, on boards like /r9k/ at least, 4chan is self-aware and a lot funnier than anything on Facebook/Twitter.

But you do of course get the increasingly more common retards who bring "rare pepes" and "dank memes" or some cuntiness in here.

Yeah, people don't realize that game design applies to everything, and the Internet today is like playing with a cheatcode.

The BBS era kicked ass for a lot reasons wayyy beyond "muh nostalgia."
-limited time meant you had something to look forward to
-limited time & slow download was an interesting resource to allocate
-bbses were fragmented and each had different software/online games/versions
-discovering a new BBS you could call into was a big deal and a new mystery
>>
>>27882114

memes originated from 4chan, were stolen by facebook, and then came full circle when 4chan started ironically using them

Government agencies learning how powerful it is.

Or conversely, normalfags making the internet mainstream, which led to the internet holding a lot of power, which the government realized later.

>Implying copying unfunny things "ironically" somehow makes it funny

It's literally indistinguishable from shit-tier normie humour.

As recently as 4 years ago, 4chan didnt have to rely on "ironically copying things" to be funny. It used to be a rare thing. Now it's literally all people do. 4chan is basically the same as my Facebook feed now.
>>
>>27882227

if you were truly around back in the day then 4chan used to be a lot of LOLSORANDUMBxD humour, pedobear xDDD THE CAKE IS A LIE , MY BODY IS READY etc etc

4chan humour is much sharper and self aware now.
You can very easily spot the true oldfags (what remains of them), true 4channers, and the outsiders based on what memes they choose to post.

If you want intelligent fedora tipping and "discussion" then go to reddit.

When it went from being a place where faggots went to just hang out and have fun to being a platform for everyone to feverishly dump massive amounts of time, energy, and money into pushing their agenda.

We see it on large scales on Facebook and YouTube with big companies pumping out clever ads to gain attention, but imo the worst ones are the common street level attention whores who are more concerned with how many likes, up-votes, subscribers, etc. their post will get them instead of having fun.

I remember Rule #1 of internet use was to never reveal personal info, I don't know what the hell happened but apparently that rule doesn't even exist anymore and people are now eager to tell everyone everything about themselves.

This is honestly why I don't give a shit about cyberbullying or doxing or anything, if you've actually put this sensitive information on the internet you're just asking to get fucked up.
>>
>>27881358
memes in a colloquial context got really focused in 2005 and then spread to mean p much any facet of internet culture present on more than one website. People got really sick of this over-saturation and started to actively reject anything that could be considered "meme-y" or have widespread appeal. 2011 4chan anti-memes for example only really worked on 4chan, with shit like ISHYGDDT depending on the posting style and tools only found on 4chan. People started to reject this too as it eventually faces a similar problem with over-saturation, just on a smaller scale. People then started using ironic memes, like >tfw and the like that are a lot less contextual than anti-memes but are much more introverted when compared to early memes. >tfw doesn't really work off the internet because it usually involves a personal anecdote or feeling that would be embarrassing without anonymity. The current meme generation is sort of an ironic version of this with pepe redraws and shit being increasingly specific and alien. What started as personal expression morphed into an expressive mask that is more impressionistic of the user's true feelings. Rather than attempt to express realistic or real world emotions, memes continue to reject mainstream appeal and depart into even more fantastic or convoluted forms. Pepe went from being a mildly gross but realistic and grounded expression of masculine emotion into a character expressing the memer's deeper feeling in less concrete ways. Rather than revel in the joys of peeing with your pants down, pepe now shows schadenfreude as he alienates and tortures his friends. This desire to repel all other forms of internet culture characterizes the post-ironic meme age, where memes are designed to alienate instead of bring together.

This is so fucking true. I swear normies probably spend more time than I do on the Internet now - considering browsing Facebook, vlogs and Instagram with your iPhone is """"the Internet"""".

Ten years ago, I was "le strange teen who uses the Windows Interwebs" to normies. Now they spend more time on it than I do. (and I spend quite a lot of time on it tbqh la famiglia)
