You don't put your grocery bags on the kitchen counter because you're bringing in dirt and germs that the bag touched when it was in your car trunk or car floor. Also, it's been handled by workers and other customers when it's been in the store.

If you wipe your counter clean right afterward then it's okay.

well that's true but at the same time have you ever tried to teach objects and classes to someone who worked in very basic python? the "le everything is an object" meme doesn't work, when people don't even know they're working with objects they don't learn the fundamentals of what that means. they basically need to learn everything all over again

plus I'm skeptical that the indentation memeing really helps teach anyone good programming practice, what it really does is make them bad at understanding the difference between a line and statement in other languages

The mold you see on fruit is just the reproductive part. The mold has 'roots' inside the fruit . One of the moldy food you can eat is cheese if you cut off the outer edge that has mold.
>>
>>27884190
>he thinks it's okay to eat old food that smells rotten as long as you boil it
Never done it, but in theory it could be fine,, depending on the food. Rot is just bacteria, so boil it to shit and it'd be safe, although I would only do it in extreme circumstances.
>he thinks it's okay to eat moldy food as long as you scrap off the mold
Definitely not okay; not all of the spores will be in large enough clumps to be visible.

>>27884229
This. I started with C++ and HTML/CSS, both are great for learning to structure your code properly. Python's memetab means you have to completely re-learn a bunch of shit when you get on to a language like C++.

That being said, habitual tabbing will make your C++ look clean as fuck.

>>27884251
Code is just a complex list of instructions for a computer based on the structure of whatever language you learn. An algorithm. Write a step-by-step guide on how to do something simple, make a coffee say; miss nothing out. That's basically pseudo-code, which you can then translate in to a programming language of your choice.

It's made for people who already know programming (says so at the start even). Sure, you can learn from it but you need to lower your expectations and learn to recognize what terminology they use that's language theory and doesn't actually concern C.

>The mold has 'roots' inside the fruit
Yes. I know about that. But if you dissect the fruit you will see that it usually doesn't spread far. If the fruit is moldy enough that you can't cut off approx 50% of it without getting all the mold you're seriously considering the wrong level of mold here. All I'm saying is that no fruit is inedible simply because you spotted mold.
But regardless. If your stomach can't handle a few grams of mold fungi you're having major issues that normal people don't have.

My view on learning C is that you should just read k&r.
Anyway I think unless this Alex Allain book teaches the way I want C/C++ to be taught. You should probably focus on C learning materials first rather than C++ learning materials. They're prone to introduce things in the wrong order from what I've seen.

Just because Python is the easiest language to write

does NOT mean it is or should be learned as a beginner language!

C should be learned as a first language, followed by C++ or Java to learn OOP AND THEN a scripting language like Python. Fucking kids taking shortcuts these days...

The problem with StackOverflow is that they very often don't give the right answers to questions. They give AN answer to a question but they're not adapting their answer to who's asking. And it's not rare that they're straight up wrong if you're asking more complicated questions.

It's a fairly good resource still if you just need a quick solution for school work or whatever.

Didn't know they existed, I just meant that the fruit would probably be covered in spores that you can't see.

This is true. Some people have stupidly weak immune systems due to lack of exposure these days though. And that's my excuse for never cleaning. To be fair, despite my asthma I have a stronger immune system than anyone I know.

>>27884586
Learning a scripting language first is like learning how to use a calculator before you can do arithmetic by hand.

One should learn a compiled procedural language first and C is the best example of that.
>>
>>27884567
>anything in particular you think might be in the wrong place? I'll find it.
Well basically the gripes I have is that they don't teach every inch of C before they head into C++ features. Because to further understanding properly you need that information. You can look at C++con and you occasionally find people who ask questions that show that they don't understand the basics of the language.
https://youtu.be/FnGCDLhaxKU?t=5764
This guy (person questioning) doesn't get the way an optimizer has to operate on data after a long talk where (at the start) the very basic idea of volatile memory was introduced (iirc this talk).
This is a C++ programmer and not a C programmer.
>>27884586
No it's simple enough to make sense to a new person. With python you don't know what you're doing and you're just learning logic/control flow at best. You're taught to think about code in the abstract level before you know the basics. If you learn C you will see that memory is a thing. How the computer actually does stuff with memory and that's all it does. This information is applicable at any level as long as the language allows it. And it better..

Not true. If you rent a house with a landlord who's even semi-competent, think about all the shit they have to do for you (or your parents or whoever's renting it), then multiply that by however many properties they have, then add all the paperwork and taxes and insurance and mortgages and all the other shit. And if you wanna get someone else to do half of that, you need to hire an agent, who will eat in to your profits hugely.

>>27884685
Sounds like the issue is actually with knowing pointers and memory allocation, which I don't fully understand myself, despite having a natural aptitude for coding. Alex Allain doesn't introduce pointers until p.157, and I think that's because introducing them early on would discourage a lot of people, and they aren't necessary for basic scripting. How a C book would treat this matter, I don't know.
>>
>>27884773
>pointers and memory allocation
It's good to have a basic understanding of what's going on here before one moves to a language that takes care of memory for you and uses pointers implicitly
>>
>>27884773
>I think that's because introducing them early on would discourage a lot of people, and they aren't necessary for basic scripting. How a C book would treat this matter, I don't know.
Well the issue isn't really what page it appears but rather what's presented before it.

I think you should know pretty much everything in K&R up to chapter 7 (where some of it isn't necessary).
So maybe 150 pages out of 179 non-appendix/standard library explanation.

Pretty much the entirety of C. So the point is that I don't see how a C++ book is likely to handle it correctly compared to a C book and then a C++ for programmers book.
>Sounds like the issue is actually with knowing pointers and memory allocation, which I don't fully understand myself
Not exactly what I complained about but yes you'd absolutely need this understanding to get most C++ features in a good way.

If C++ had a defer keyword like Go. Maybe it'd be more OK not to have the pointer language. But the lack of a defer and reliance on reference counted pointers doesn't really work well.
>>
>>27884869
Oh I absolutely agree, I just don't think it's something that should be taught before things like types or arrays/structures (just after structures I'd say).

>>27884927
If you have the time, then yeah, C then C++ is probably the best way to go. But for someone who just wants to learn C++ as their first language, spending all that time reading C before even starting on C++, then having to re-cover the C stuff in case there are any differences (a new coder wouldn't know where the similarities ended), just isn't feasible, especially since there are C++-specific textbooks written for this exact purpose.

I'm not saying you're wrong at all, just that you're not considering most of the audience; new programmers won't have the time, CS students won't have time, programmers using other languages who just need a crash course in C++ won't have time, and hobbyist programmers probably won't have the time or patience.

In this case, I think the shortcut is fully justified, to almost any end.
>>
>>27883928
You are missing out on some of the best works ever written if you refuse to read fiction.
>La divina commedia
>Paradise Lost
>The Catcher in the Rye
>1984
Just to name a few.
>>
>>27885043
I don't agree. The similarities end where you start learning new things in C++. It was obvious to me.
Sure if we're talking specific C versions like maybe C11 does have a lot of features that blur the line.

I don't think every beginner C++ book has to be bad. I can't just read them all and say if they are or not. If there's a more new programmer oriented C starter in the C++ book and then they go into the C++ after that that's a good C++ for beginners book.

But.. Not to be rude but I'm questioning your judgement since you said you don't get pointers. Do you only use references then?
>>
>>27885081
but 1984 is a documentary about present-day england
>>
>>27885116
C++11 is pretty much standard now, I don't think many people use anything else without good reason. And my point about not having the time still stands.

I think an ideal C++ book would mention the C stuff where necessary; Allain doesn't seem to, but has a full chapter explaining pointers and memory before even mentioning anything C++-specific, so I'd say that's decent enough, up to an intermediate level at least. As for the rest of C, I'm not sure if there's anything missing.

I know how to use them when I need to, I just don't understand them enough to be totally comfortable with them; I avoid them where I can. You're right to question my judgement though; since I tend to only write basic CLI scripts, I don't have any experience with larger projects. I just did a year of CS and dropped out for personal reasons, and just continued coding when I had a reason to (for example, I had a few friends over to play poker and they forgot the chips, so I wrote a program that could replace them).

There is no other explanation except that these kids are slower than the other kids. You suck, all good fiction was written by men. Fiction is not for women. Romance novels are typical for women. Women don't read epic stories like Dune. Speaking of epics, what of Homor's Odyssey? That was fiction too, are you that uncultured that your dumb brain is willing to disregard all fictional stories?
