I used to hate my skin so much I put in effort to avoid the sun as much as possible to avoid getting darker, hoping I'd at least become relatively less dark with it. I hated it to the point it made me nauseous whenever I looked in the mirror, mixed with resentment.
But although I still am convinced my life would've been piss easy and bloody swell if I were born white instead, and would take the option to magically become 100% Caucasian if it were presented to me in a heartbeat, I'm also aware there's nothing I can do about it.
It still does feel a bit out of place how a lot of black people I know seem to play on the whole stereotype stuff while I have no connection to that, and how most of my interests and hobbies tend to be almost void of other non-white people in terms of social activities around it, but it is what it is.
Although it causes additional social disadvantages and such, I try not to focus on such things anymore.
I'd like to think I'm of about average intellect (regardless of others claiming I'm above average, they're probably just high-balling it), I have roughly average looks, I have a sufficient set of social skills to make my way in society with enough effort, and I have a pretty good personality if I may say so myself; the majority of people I meet will go from either a neutral or cautious disposition towards me to a positive one within a brief conversation, a brief encounter, some small talk, or what have you.
Another thing is that as I never had looks or skintone to work in my favour, I grew to rely on intellect and personality, as well as course of actions and how I treat others, as parameters to quantify my own quality and worth.
Because of that, I value such traits a lot more than looks in other people as well, which taught me to spot more subtle but important signs of personality traits in others, allowing me to surround myself with great people while avoiding crappy ones with fair ease.

It's easier to just embrace those stereotypical things and make it part of your own. You can use it to seem cooler/more rebellious, you could even play it in such a way that it entertains and draws people to you. And you could use some parts to play a victim if that's your thing.
I can't relate to any of that though, instead I kind of feel responsible to be living proof not all non-whites are crappy people by trying to be exemplary even if it means self-effacing and not taking all chances offered in life.
It's not too healthy, but to me it works better than self-loathing and wanting to off myself for my skin tone among other reasons.

This is also true. Although as aforementioned I've had plenty of times people ask about my skin tone/race and such, it's often just a curiosity. I get asked by people if they can touch my afro as well, as it's a pretty novel thing and thus interesting.A huge chunk of compliments given to me are about my 'fro, from both women and men.

Especially on /r9k/ and /b/ (and obviously /pol/ from the start), and even more so once things like "cucking", interracial porn, race, and other related baiting started to occur at a higher frequency, focus on race and supposed inferiority/superiority skyrocketed on here.
Much like anything one could become insecure about (dicksize, height, looks, etc.), how one perceives his own race/skin can change and shift in notability for oneself as well through the crap-ton of bait threads.

In my case I think it's more a poor phrasing on people's end. Rather than ask where the skin tone comes from, they ask it in a roundabout way probably presuming I'm not only 1/4th non-white.
