I do it obsessively. It relieves my anxiety as a cigarette does for a smoker. Even when I'm not tense, it helps keep me balanced. If my nails get too long I get uneasy about them being uneven or the white edges not all being the same length, then I end up clipping them. If there's dirt under my fingernails, it's the only thing on my mind.

I tried stopping twice in my life. First time, I did it while on a week long camping trip because it was in north New York during the winter so I had gloves on or wasn't idle enough to really pay attention to them. I remember towards the end of the week I noticed dirt under my fingernails and I bit them off immediately. The second time was more recent and the issue was that my nails are slightly bent from years of biting before I converted to clipping or situations where clippers weren't available. I couldn't find a comfortable look that fit in a unified look for all my nails and I ended up just clipping them all off to start over, then continued to maintain them at a bare minimum length, and of course at that point it just got worse and I just clipped them obsessively as I did before I tried to control it.

Basically, you take a bunch of different consistencies of dirt, mold them into a ball, and sit there like an autist and compress progressively finer layers of dirt onto this mud ball.
If your technique is good, you end up with a perfectly spherical ball of mud that you can polish up.
It's a free hobby provided you can get dirt or water. I don't care how retarded it looks. It's really satisfying to take literal dirt and throw a bunch of time at it and get something aesthetically pleasing as a result.

Trust me, if you never had anyone to "play" against, your skills are complete shit compared to people that have played against other people.
Sure if you train hard on your own you will beat most average people who have played chess a few times during their lives, but you would be slaughtered at the most basic of basic tournaments in the lowest class.
I learned this the hard way. I was obsessed with Chess as a kid. I played battle chess in DOS vs the AI, and against my brother ever now and then when he could be assed to. I thought I was amazing at it since I had devoted so much time for it, but my first time at a tourny I got absolutely wrecked.
I learned then the hard way how high the skill gap in Chess is, particurlarly if you go up against people who have played against other GOOD people for years.
TLDR; if you haven't played chess vs many different people who are also good at chess, you don't know shit about chess.

i go to the same coffee shop every day and sit in the same spot by the window and write about little scenes i witness. today i wrote about an awkward man in his twenties who came in to ask for work. all the workers there are 9/10 stacies so he could barely make eye contact and stumbled through the whole conversation that was basically just the girl telling him to try somewhere else, but he wouldn't leave. she asked him if he had any experience and he said no but i have lots of SKILLS and then he talked about playing video games. i guess it's like a diary or journal for myself. a mosaic of life as it goes on around me while i sit with my lonely cup of coffee in the corner.
