I think this outlook on dorks who are all about their single life is skewed because it seems to presume cognizant choices where I'm not sure they existed. Like the mention of long lists of TV shows and movies; it seems to presume that the lonely person picked those things because they allow the person to be alone, but TV and movies are also hugely popular hobbies that a lot of people get steered into early while blissfully unaware of the long-term effects of engaging deeply in those hobbies. I think the reality in a lot of cases is that people end up alone and lonely because they fell into those hobbies, rather than they wanted to be alone and picked a hobby that suited them.
That can become a difficult Catch-22 kind of trap where you need the groundwork of a social life to start working on getting the groundwork of a social life. These people trying to get out there later in life, when they're more mature and more cognizant of the need for a social life, is like trying to speak a whole new language, and they have oodles of life experiences that are not only not helpful, but can be actively detrimental. They get frustrated easily because they have no way of telling if they're doing it right or how well things are going, and when they don't get easily recognizable good signs (like banging) the only information they have is that they're still lonely and nothing seems to be working. They make those profiles that way because that is who they are and that's what they have to give, however meager it is. Just as much as with anyone else, there's a long story behind the guy holding a sword in his okcupid profile, and I think it's pretty simplistic to say he's just a narcissistic asshole.
