I'm in a similar boat. I've taken on an accounting degree on a whim and learned a bit more about what businesses want and how they function.
I think the straw that broke the camel's back in my case was being told I needed 2 years of professional dishwashing experience to wash a quaint restaurant's dishes. I asked the lady if years of washing dishes in my own home counted and she said "no." Probably for the best because I realize working for someone with that unrealistic hiring practice would have done more harm than good.
Your prospect probably won't increase much; especially if your degree is unrelated to the job. They're more inclined to use the "overqualified" excuse if you're younger than if you're older.
