I'd have to define basic stuff first, so basic stuff would be like major and minor scales, major and minor chords and arpeggios, basic barre chords, simple techniques like strumming and picking single lines, alternate picking, basic chord progressions
intermediate is just an extension of all of that stuff, go read guthrie govans book for intermediate guitarists, it covers most of the stuff you need to know. if you can nail some David Gilmour solos to some degree, that's intermediate level kind of playing, he doesn't do too much crazy technical stuff, but that doesn't mean mimicking him is easy
advanced level stuff is like jazz, jazz fusion, gypsy jazz, some types of metal are complicated in their own ways too if you want to go down that route, Steve Vai and guthrie govan types of guys are advanced level stuff too.
High level advanced stuff is like Joe pass, Shawn Lane, and Allan holdsworth stuff.
and I'm sure there's a classical guitarist laughing at me while reading this. but classical guitar is a whole different beast and I don't know much about it.

I found that learning scales didn't really help me enjoy my instrument. I feel like it might be important for song writing or whatever, but to just have fun I just use tabs and never even think about the scales.

Also bass is a hard instrument, but it depends on how you play it. Most fuckers have no clue. Designing a perfect bassline is a fucking divine art form, because it needs to be absolutely perfect and bring the entire band together.

Most music is writing in ultra basic musical theory and their is no real benefit to knowing them. Some autistic kids who are self thought trough the internet just overvalue them because they have no clue what they are talking about. The whole fucking word "scale" makes me cringe the fuck out.

like if someone asks me to vamp over a C dom7 chord, I know a C mixolydian (basically an F maj scale) will fit over that, and I can add some chromatic tones to it to imply different chords on top of what I'm vamping over. like if I add in an Eb passing tone I'd be implying a C7#9 chord.
you kind of need to know this stuff so you can 'learn everything just to forget it' at some point. personally I need some way to label what I'm playing, or I just get stuck and play the same shit over and over.
