The difference in the atmosphere is huge. At a convenience store, customers will frequently pause to talk to you, be friendly with you, and in some cases even give you their number or invite you to hang out. Because people rarely go to convenience stores at their own leisure and don't typically have other shit to do. And there are often breaks where all you have to do is wipe some shelves down.
At a grocery store, you really are a wageslave. They're always deliberately understaffed to cut costs, customers range from being apathetic about you to outright hostile, your managers will ask you to work while sick, and the lines never end. It's miserable.
