When I was in college, we had a term called "pregaming." It means getting drunk before you even go to the party, so you don't have to spend a single second there sober, since it's fucking lame to be at a party sober. Very few sober people are comfortable at parties where there's tons of people they don't know.
If you aren't a social butterfly and if you aren't willing to drink, parties are something you should continue to avoid.
