Having done multiple playthroughs of the the series, I actually think DaS might be the worst of them. What's good is good, but the second half of the game is awful. You're better off putting down the controller after Penn and Teller.
DaS2 isn't without its flaws, and DeS isn't without its clunkiness and balance issues, but at least they're completed games and not blatantly strung together unfinished assets.

DS2 plot was regurgitated from DS1. It felt uninspired, many enemies worked the same and the world was hardly connected to one another. I felt i was running through theme parks. The game was overall too long and i couldnt help myself but begging for the game to end once i finished of the mirror knight. The worst flaw of the game is the healing system. Once i got addicted to crack crystals the game was done. the whole battle system and enemy placement revolved around a poorly implemented healing mechanic.
DS2 felt good the first time when i was blinded by new game euphoria, the longer i had the game and the longer i played it opened me up for its imperfections. it is by no means a terrible game, but in comparision to the other games it sinks to the bottom of the pond like a rock.

I agree that DaS2 didn't have much more ambition than giving the kids more of that hard game they liked, and that many of its bosses were lackluster, but I look back on it and don't think "what a shitty fucking area" except for Shrine of Amana. It feels complete even if it doesn't feel as groundbreaking, and ultimately that's why I prefer it. And it only took me two years and multiple playthroughs of all the rest of the games to realize it.
