What music are cool people into?
I don't really get music but I'd like to have something to talk about with some hipster normies.
Are there any bands/musicians that are hot now?
Can you recommend some ressources for current hip music (websites with reviews, youtube channels)?
What genres should I look into?

Come on family. I need some serious suggenstions. I really have no idea where to start.
>>
>>27731002
First of all, "cool people"? Really? Sounded like bait from the get go. If you want to know what cool people listen to, go to /mu/ and then commit suicide. It all boils down to what you enjoy m8, good taste comes later. Any specific genres you're interested in? Metal, classical, electronic, other?

I don't enjoy music. When I check out the stuff that /mu/ talks about, it all sounds extremely boring.
Can you recommend some resources that typical normies that are "into music" use?
Also a couple of bands that are "in" right now.
>commit suicide

>ressources that normies use
>couple of bands that are "in" right now
Wew. Once again, that's a bad way to go about it. Do you want to listen to good stuff or just appear to? If it's just for show, then I wouldn't know what's "in". How about this? Minimal-ish so you can do something else at the same time and not get distracted.

Thanks family, sounds really nice.
I feel like if I start listening to a lot of music I might start enjoying it as well. But I mostly just want to have a hobby and something to talk about to cool people

Maybe happy hardcore and else I suggest you explore this, it's a map of music genres, the closer they're together the more they're alike. if you click on them you hear a preview of a song.

Thanks for suggestions, I tried listening to Kanye West multiple times, but it sounds extremely boring. This is what I mean, I don't really "music". I used to listen to rap years ago but even then I don't understood why Kanye West is supposed to be so great.

>>27731469
No, hits are terrible. It's like the same shitty electronic song over and over again.

Sorry, it might sound like I am b8ing here, or trying to start an argument, but I am really not.

Yeah, this stuff is great and I really enjoy this type of music although I don't think you can really discuss it in depth with somebody.
>>
>>27731538
I'm confused because you're saying:

1) Give me music suggestions
2) I dont like music

Literally, this is what you've given us to work with. All the suggestions so far are, in your eyes, "boring", which is not a helpful description. If you want to find music that will make you come across are not an autist then yes you will need to put up with some music you don't like. If you're serious, then really (and I know you won't like this), check out /mu/. They get a bad rep but ultimately nothing is cooler than having artists and music that you genuinely like, because most people respect individual preferences (judge of artistic taste, being "in the know", conversation topics, etc) So go there and lurk for at least a week, downloading and listening to one album a day. Congratulations, you either like this music, or need to force yourself to act like it. If you don't find anything you like, then just concentrate on lurking top 40 for hip hop and electronic (two coolest genres)

If by cool people you mean normies then you're in for a fun ride.
First we have the tumblrcore

And If you're white then it's essentially that you listen to various trap / rap that Pitchfork (music review site) gives higher then a 6.

In-depth discussions of anything are rare as it is, music least of all. Just enjoy music on your own terms, and develop opinions on it and people will listen, or they won't.

If you want music you can talk about to normies, listen to the radio or find a Top 40 playlist.

If you want more "hip" music that you can talk about to people, check out Pitchfork. They'll introduce you to the more mainstream music that's "cool" to listen to.

If you want to music that you actually enjoy, just start somewhere broad and find out who you like. Explore related bands through Pandora or Spotify or even Wikipedia and make playlists of everything you enjoy.

I really like Spotify's Discover Weekly. It automatically makes you a playlist each week of songs it things you might like. I've found soo many new songs and bands through it and the more you listen to, the more it learns your particular taste.

I am so bad at talking about things I like to people.
I just say "yeah I liked this song, it was pretty funky" or "yeah that movie was great, this character was fun". I couldn't have a proper discussion about it with anyone without sitting down and writing down exactly what I think about everything. Otherwise I just come across like a shallow prick that doesn't know what he likes (which is mildly true)
>>
>>27732007

rap, some kind of house genre music, and basically any popular song if you know your local radiostation that is popular with people in 20's or

music videos you see on youtube that get 100+ million views in a short amount of time
>>
>mostly apathetic to music in general, it's just background noise to actual fun/interesting things
>everyone I interact with takes music seriously
>everyone I meet for the first time always asks "so what music do you like" before anything else
what the fuck is it with normies and music? it's fucking boring. how can they bother with that drivel so much? why do they not care about other forms of media, especially ones that are vastly superior in every way like cinema and video games?
>>
>>27732217
Most people don't know much about music theory, or how it's actually made, which is fine. Here are some very general elements to note/point out in a song:

>Structure: I like the chorus/verse of song X
>Build-up/climax
>notable contrasts between moods in same song
>free association: that part reminds me of X
>qualifiers: dreamy, contemplative, trippy, fucked-up etc.
People have whole conversations and never go beyond this.
>>
>>27732300
Checked.

Different strokes I guess. Maybe try picking up an instrument? I started to appreciate music much more after I started playing bass.
>>
>>27732300
>everyone always asks what music do you like
You're not supposed to answer that seriously, it's just a quick ice breaker to see if you have anything in common. Sperging out about your favourite memevapor artist is not what you're supposed to do in that situation.

>Maybe try picking up an instrument?
Uhh no. I'm not wasting time on that. It takes a long ass time to get good, and as I said, music is trash tier media. I would never waste time learning how to make it.
>>27732511
That's not what happens.
It's more like
>hey what music do you like
>uhh you know whatever's on the radio/pandora/whatever
>okay....
end of that conversation. If I relieved my true colors and said "none because music is for boring losers who have no life and are incapable of actually doing something outside of passively existing while sounds play around them" the conversation wouldn't only end but I'd look like a huge asshole.
I don't know any artists that aren't mega popular so I don't see a point in lying like that.

It's just a shitty area I'm in or something, everyone here is a loser who only cares about music. I don't even know how you can get into music, there's nothing to do done with it. You just sit there while it plays, so boring.
>>
>>27732587
There are ways to put it without sounding like a complete dick

Just say something like
>I've never really been a huge music person, I normally only check out what's on the radio. Is there any bands you would recommend?

instead of going on a massive pretentious rant
>>
>>27732587
That's just it, asshole. When you start to play an instrument, you realize how difficult it can be and you really start to appreciate good music and musicians.

But this is probably bait so you can fuck right off.

>This is probably serviceable if you want to converse with normies. Hipsters will like you, and you'll get to act smug around pleb normies.

I'm the person who made that list and a career musician. Normies might know some of those things, but the breakdown is like this:

>Animal Collective

Brooklyn-based LSD taking, beach boys esque weirdos. You would have been real cool knowing them a few years ago but now it's just considered bland good taste

>SBTRKT

Says "I know what post-dubstep is"

>Katryanada

Says "I have enjoyed beatmaking culture back to Primo and Dilla, but am not out of touch with the kids."

>Burzum

"I have mainstream hipster taste in Black Metal, and am aware of its turbulent and violent history"

>Charles Mingus

"I understand that jazz is an american classical music with political overtones"

>Surgeon

"I enjoy all flavors of electronic music but have settled upon minimal detroit techno as my particular fetish"

>Coil

"Throbbing Gristle was great, but I prefer the more deliberate and subversive explorations of electronics"

>Eric B and Rakim

Says that you've done your homework with the classics of rap.

>A Tribe Called Quest

This is entry-level hipster rap but still very good, one of those things that gen x hipsters would memorize every word of.

>Joy Division

"My first post-punk band" for everyone, which also turns out to be THE first post-punk band ever.

>>27732556

This is all I ever hear when people bitch about Kanye. I appreciate how much he obviously loves and cares about his music t b h. I also personally find him fucking hilarious for pissing off people so much.
>>
>>27733671 cont.

I guess my criteria would be this:

"Cool people" in the musical world are generally ones with broad taste in music, because they've had a wide variety of listening experiences, which hints at more experience in life. The particular choices I've made are ones that indicate both breadth of experience simply for knowing they exist, and depth of taste by the amount of genre-fans who actually rate them as good in their particular world.

However, there are equally valid examples right in the mainstream, like "early Madonna" or "The White Album" or "Patsy Cline" etc. etc., but we avoid those because a hipster will choose very carefully of what music represents them at the moment.

Oh and learn "holland,1945" word for word and mumble it under your breath
