Bulbasaur was clearly the best choice for gen 1, I don't know why people don't realize this. Slaughter the first two gyms and any cave areas (including Rockets), the only time you're at a disadvantage is with Blaine, who can be easily defeated with anything that knows Surf or Dig.
Mudkip too, a Swampert with Surf/Earthquake/Ice Beam/Body Slam was unstoppable and won me all the battle frontier things in Emerald, those were the times.
