I see them in people's houses but I've never used one. What are you meant to do with them?

just get some toilet cleaner, or if you don't have it, any sort of cleaner will do, the more astringent the better, and scrub the toilet
you'll find it to be quite an easy satisfying job as porcelain is quite easy to clean and always (at least in my very limited experience) comes up shiny white
btw even if you clean in the most retarded non-conventional way because no one showed you (pro tip: the internet is full of resources to make up for poor parenting) it's not like anyone's there with a clipboard judging grading your technique
