I'd also recommend to trim the hair with some small shears like pictured if they're any longer than say an inch. This will help to prevent gumming up your straight razor if you choose to use one.

It's going to take a while in any case if he uses a manual razor, I said straight but I meant manual. Doing shears on the ball hairs won't add much time to the process. It's either trim them down with shears so you don't gunk up your razor, or gunk up the razor and have to rinse it off after every few strokes.
