It's not really about embarrassment at all. It's about the fact that the one drop rule is more or less still a thing. When people see a mixed kid, because of the dark skin, the kid is thought of as black and whatever else, but primarily black. The rest of the world sees them as a black person, so of course they're gonna identify more with life as a black person.

I don't remember anything specifically since high school and college were a while ago for me and the topic only ever really came up there, but in high school there was a girl in the class above me and a girl in my class who dated like one or two black guys but instantly became knows as the girls who liked black guys and were constantly getting shit on for it behind their backs.
