I really don't know, I frequently travel and I can tell you the US has odd social pressures that I never really felt living in other places.
I feel like a lot of it might be media pressure and hyperconsumer culture, most people in the United States are so used to the decadence that we have become a stagnant society and transfixed on narcissistic standards of success.
