I'd definitely recommend bushwalking.
I go hiking/bushwalking all the time and I've only ever encountered 1 snake, down near my foot. Its neck was raised but I quickly stepped away. They mostly slither away when they hear you coming so it's very rare to see one. On overnight trips I carry a Personal Locator Beacon, you press the button if you get fucked by a boulder, snake etc (or you're hopelessly lost) and they come and rescue you. It's comforting to know there's no risk. The only way you can die of a snake is if you don't get to hospital for hours, it's nothing to really worry about. Hiking in itself is beautiful and it's the best thing I do. I encourage everyone, there's so many good places especially around Sydney. >>27599395
You're right, Blue Mountains national park is terrific (we were at Lapstone yesterday). It's easily one of the best areas in the country for walking. Wollemi national park is my next big ambition, its just north of the mountains and absolutely huge. I've been around Mt Wilson canyons, Newnes etc and the combination of the wilderness and the heritage (especially the old train lines) is spectacular.

I haven't gone solitary before (that alone brings about a host of issues, you'd want a rescue beacon at hand for those scenarios but I probably will try it in a while, sounds like a great experience), I tend to go with a group of guys. I use either a hiking tent or a tarp&groundsheet (sometimes a hammock tent if I can afford the weight). For food I tend to just have those lights dehydrated meals for dinners that you can pick up from camping shops, oats/up&go for breakfast (again the longer it is the more I'm concerned about weight, might take powdered milk for example), wraps and whatnot for lunch, muesli bars, dried fruit, chocolate for snacks. Water wise I take purification tablets (the best method, ultralight and take like 20 minutes to take effect) and some bottles of water from home to start off with (1.5 litres a day works if you can't refill, plus some for making the dinner meal). I always end up packing more food than I need. As I go on more serious hikes I'll probably start rationalizing. Good luck, you shouldn't need to spend too much money.
