Partially it's timezones - people are generally most active on the internet beween 5pm and 10pm, so if you're on here when it's around that time in Australia, you'll see more Australians.
But I think the main thing that's at play here is that this is a predominantly US-populated site - you can just talk about things that are unique to American culture and know for sure that you'll have an audience of people that understand it. Australians also come here, but in much smaller numbers, so they have to announce that they're Australian in order to
a) signpost to other Australians that they're Australian in order to generate relatable discussion
b) signpost to everyone of other nationalities that they're Australian and thus what they're talking about is potentially not something they can relate to
Thus you're seeing a lot of Australians declare their nationality and therefore perceiving that there's a disproportionate amount of them, without recognising that the vast majority of posts you see that don't mention nationality are coming from murricans.
Case in point - ever seen a USA thread on here? No, but Australia and UK threads are common. A USA thread would be pointless.
