The fact they even watch over 4chan made people reactionary. Did you miss the 3 or 4 years of people being paranoid about reddit and tumblr shilling? Most of it wasn't even from /pol/.
It doesn't matter if there actually was an SJW invasion, the fact that people thought there was had the effect of pushing people toward reactionary right wing views. Gamergate got into the media, people like Milo showed up and those views quickly became solidified.
