Does depression make memory worse?

Ever since I relapsed into depression my short term and long term memory has gone to shit. There will be times where I think of something, then I get distracted for a few seconds and forget what I was thinking about doing.

My long term memory has gone to shit too, I've forgot loads of things which have happened in my life, and I'm failing my studies because I just can't remember the content anymore. I'm not dumb I just can't remember it.

Has anyone else noticed their memory go to shit so suddenly?

Memory loss is one of the primary symptoms of depression.

There's a reason why depression in old people causes something called pseudodementia

I've had depression and it hasn't affected my memory at all.

Depression for long period of times, i'm talking about years, damage your brain.

Memory should be your least concern 2bh

It is a concern when I'm forgetting things a few seconds after I've thought them because my train of thought was derailed.

It's just adding on more unnecessary shit

What should I look out for most?

It makes sense that it would. Depression is a lack of serotonin in the brain and serotonin is a neurotransmitter that facilitates the firing of synapses and electrical activity in the brain.

Take away or reduce serotonin and there's less activity going on there, hence shit memory. iirc my memory was worse when i was depressed the last 8 years or so. I got on meds last year and feel sharper than I have as far back as I can remember.

OP here

I live in the UK so free but shit healthcare.

Would you recommend me feting formally diagnosed as having some form of depression so I can get access to drugs.

Or is the stigma of depression not worth it?

You can make a comeback if you can find some reason to get undepressed or be purposeful in life. Source: experience.
