England is a country that's a part of the British Isles, so in no way are Australians English.
Your joke may have worked if we'd been talking about 'white people' or people of English descent, but we weren't.
The vast majority of Australians are actually better educated, cleaner, smarter, better looking, and happier than even upper-middle class English people. The English would like to maintain the stereotype from the 1960's that Australia was a hole compared to England, but it's simply not true now and probably never has been true. Massive rates of immigration to Australia from England are testament to this fact.
I've never in my life heard anyone use the term "lad" in Australia, we don't even use "mate" except in situations of aggression against strangers.
