I'm mainly self-taught, studied it between age 9 and 12, but stopped as a dumb rebel-against-parents thing. Picked it back up around may last year and have been playing pretty actively since. Dad sells, builds and repairs violins as a side business so he's been a great help.

By playing the same few songs over and over again for a few years, honestly.
Well, they might sound heavenly to you, but I made a lot of mistakes and my play is still far from what would be considered good by any formally trained pianist.
Although the Katawa Shoujo thing I recorded about two weeks into learning it.
My secret is to exclusively play things I enjoy. If you play things you enjoy, you have the motivation to sit down at the piano and keep playing until you can bring yourself pleasure that is even greater than simply listening to the songs you like.
When you actually play a song yourself, you have total control over the emotions you give yourself and you can optimise the tonality and dynamic of every song you can play to bring yourself the maximum pleasure in accordance with your taste.
Being forced to learn pieces just because they're part of some programme or canon, I think that kills interest and makes the whole thing a chore. Maybe for a professional pianist that's important. But then again, if you need to practice a certain technique, you can always find a piece you love that requires mastery of it.

I don't know. I didn't listen to music at all until a couple of years ago. No one ever encouraged me to take up music as a kid. But I listen to a lot of music now and it's a big part of what I do to kill time.
Seeing people who are talented at music makes me very sad sometimes because it makes me think that I've wasted my life, and that I discovered music too late to really develop it into a passion/hobby of mine.
