I think Eva is worth watching just because so many later things make references to it, and because it's so universal in the anime community and it sucks not knowing what people are talking about, but it's not actually very good either.

There is no reason to watch shows solely for the references. If you want to watch a show that is referenced throughout the anime community often, watch something good, like Ashita no Joe. You should watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann if you are a depressed robot, its a good series to introduce you to anime, there are huge gundam robot battles and all of the tropes that anime shows like to cater towards. Its also got a lot of humour in it while not taking itself seriously yet still being a very good plot, also it will help your depression because it is all about muh fighting spirit.

Madoka is a deconstruction series. If you recommend it for a newcomers first things to watch you're an asshat. The point of the series is to place strain on the shallow or bland archetypes of the genre, show the reader where the cracks happen, and paint out the complimentary character depth to the watcher. What happens to a magical girl if they don't win every time? What if death became a real, potent fear for the girls? How would they be corrupted by their own desires? The show is stylistically well done. The monsters have a jarring, unworldly effect that clashes with the sweet, childish design and art style of the characters. It may not be "comfy", but that doesn't make the series garbage because you're a lazy watcher. The series is not without its flaws, but it's a well done example of deconstruction.
