The moral of evangelion isn't "be yourself".
The entire story revolves around the hedgehog dilemma.
When a hedgehog wants to get close to another hedgehog, it risks getting hurt as hedgehogs have prically spines all over their body.
It's the same thing with humans. When humans get close to one another they risk hurting each other. If I date a girl and she hurts me, then I might say "no more getting close to others! I'm going to be a loner and never love again!". But therein lies the dilemma, as being alone ALSO hurts.
This is represented both in the interactions between the characters of Evangelion, but also in visual representations, such as the AT field, which kaworu reveals humans also have. Shinji's wish is to remove all borders between humans, eliminating all chances of being hurt by others. Getting rid of the AT field through instrumentality.
It's the perfect show for robots as the moral of the story is essentially "If your choice is between running a chance at being hurt (being close to others), or GUARANTEE being hurt by loneliness (become a loner), it's better to choose the first option as it includes a chance at happiness.

I watched Evangelion dubbed originally too, when I used to rent tapes from this place called the Beaman Company. I would actually get upset if any were dubbed (they weren't consistent). Then I used to watch Urusei Yatsura every other Sunday night on KTEH, and it was subbed, so I had to deal with it. Later I bought Beautiful Dreamer (a Urusei Yatsura movie) on DVD and watched it in English and realized that I preferred it in Japanese, and felt that the characters were watered down in English.
