What's your favourite plato, though? I read through his complete works. I think i enjoy Timaeus and so on best. I'd have a coffee with you and discuss libertarianism and so on tbqh famalamabingbangbong

Today: Hapiness is like 9. Probably because i remembered spinoza. Anybody want a big fat hug?

Your music taste is dope. I love Viet Cong and Car Seat Headrest. Have you listened to Women? Public Strain is legit one of the best albums I've ever heard, but it's hard to get into at first. Eyesore if probably the greatest song I've ever heard, it's outro is absolutely sublime

You like Moby Dick too, that's one of my favourite books, not a lot of r9k has patrician taste. You should check out Blood Meridian if you haven't already, thematically similar with equally brilliant prose.
>>27434168
loldude you've only ever been spoonfed the shitty materialistic modern 'spiritual' life. I see you like Epictetus though, he offers a very practical guide to what, essentially 'spirituality' should be. If you want to go deeper read some Zen or Taoist texts.
>>
>>27434299
>Zen or Taoist texts

I tried getting through the Tao te Ching, but it was too incomphrehensible to me. Although i could probably appreciate what he tries to say better now than when i tried reading it a year ago or so.
>>
>>27434372
It's better to have some understanding of what Taoism is before reading it. I got that from my high school Chinese teacher, so idk what books you should read, but basic introductory texts shouldn't be too hard to find.
>>
>>27434426
Most spirituality i have read is too life-denying. Like Hinduism, maybe? I have no deep longing for nothingness (right now), i want to fuck this world metaphorically. I don't think it explains anything, either. All answers to "why the universe?" are just put out of hand as "as a thing striving for nothingness" doesn't answer why it appeared in the first place. It's not even worthy of being called spirituality then. It's still too human.
>>
>>27434472
lmao, I guess different approaches to spirituality work for different people. I've always been really attracted to a quiet life of nothingness and simple solitude, without achieving much. I really just want to find contentment, not change the world. I get INFP on the same test that you get INTJ/ENTJ on though so that probably explains it.

Thanks for reading my blog post, senpai.
>>
>>27435294
INFP and INFJ are mysteries to me, i cannot understand how they function. What do you want out of life? What's your raison d' etre? If nothing else, to find one?
>>
>>27436119
For me, just chill and find contentment, I guess? I like artistic expression (through writing for me), and lots of other INFs do, but I'm under no delusions that I'm going to even get published and become successful. At the moment, I just want to have enough money to survive, work I enjoy, and enough free time to read, write, go hiking, relax, meditate etc.

We're all going to die and eventually humanity will go extinct and the whole universe will collapse, so there's no point in trying to do great things that will get you remembered by coming generations. If through living out your life according to your own abilities/goals you end up with prestige/power and fame, then that's all fine, I just think people who live purely for those things are living in bad faith. Personally, I just want to spend my life living it in accordance with my own 'nature,' if that makes sense. I'm not going to force myself to achieve things which really don't matter to me.

Thanks for reading my blog post, senpai.

These threads make me really sad. I don't know. You can list so much about yourself but to what end? It seems the closer people get the further are from each other. I know none of this matters but it still gets in my head. It's one of the only things that still can.

You just sit awake all night thinking about how terrifying and in straights everything is. Maybe it is easier to just say it is intimidating? That I can do nothing better than doing this? I don't know. I'm tired, and sad. Thinking sucks.

Also, there was a typo from the tired.

I don't think philosophy is a normie thing to begin with, except if it's simplistic quotes on t shirts.
Even normies who talk and read philosophy are probably considered a bit eccentric if it's bought up in most social circles.
As for analytics, Locke and Russell are good in my book, and logical positivism in general. But I'm poorly read in that field.

Locke: not an analytic philosopher.
Analytic philosophy is a tradition starting in the 20:th century. It just tends to have a close connection with anglophone philosophy, but it need not be such philosophy. All you need to do analytic philosophy is 1) Respect science 2) Be a smug little shit (like me) 3) Write in an extremely disinterested formal tone 4) Write with such extreme clarity that everybody who goes for it can read it (it can still be information-dense though).

I want to do some kind of analytic metaphysics. That's my goal, sort of. But we need to get to that point in time to start with. I am not one to go for the easy deal here, i want to understand the whole tradition so i can fully understand modern philosophy too.
>>
>>27437715
My mistake, like I said, poorly read. Any books or papers to suggest?

That said, good luck with your goals
>>

I doubt i'm worse read than you. I was going to post my whole list of just philosophical works i've read but somehow non-ascii text i couldn't remove got in there.

I found these little essays from Oxford nice in this, in general most is on SEP and IEP.

plato.stanford.edu

iep.utm.edu

There's also no way around just going about reading the works. There's not much i can recommend reading as of now. Book 3 of WtP maybe, if you want to know the thing i deeply suspect but want to resist. Most are listed in my chart. >>27434168
I'm probably even worse read than you, so i can't recommend much. Read the whole tradition, i guess. Get the essential shit down first and then go back to specific influences like the neoplatonists so on if you want to.

Essential:
Descartes, Meditations and Discourses
Spinoza, Ethics
Leibniz, Monadology
Locke, Essay on human understanding
Berkeley, Philosophical Essays
Hume, Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and Concerning the Principles of Morals

My friends thought they were funny and asked me to do more. I also learned video editing while doing this. I eventually had to shut down my channel after i started college because someone was going to show the videos to my new colleagues and i couldn't risk to ruin my image. I still have the videos on my computer, i would show them to you but i was speaking my native language (romanian) in them. I'm thinking of starting a new channel though.

John Howard, basically a right of center guy who was unpopular for introducing consumption tax (GST). He's since been vindicated by Australia's high living standards, low poverty, low crime and government support that is almost unparalleled in any similar democracy. All a result of more government revenue, it also helped us avoid being too impacted by the subprime mortgage crisis (although, like most countries we did have some investment in it. I may have put America as my favourite country but, seriously, fuck those idiots for that massive oversight).

I like meta-ethics. Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes is probably the most reasonable account of our source of ethics I've ever read. I also like David Hume. I like Immanuel Kant as well because, while I think he's completely wrong about ethics being rational, I do like some of his ethics. I think everyone likes the idea of being treated as an ends in and of themselves rather than merely as a means to an end.

My favourite modern philosopher is Derek Parfit, though I am partial to John Searle just for how contrarian he is, it's important to keep functionalists and determinists reminded that they don't actually *know* anything.

I'm a big fan of panpsychism as a theory of mind, especially since it completely fucks with our ethical intuitions. Functionalism, the generally accepted theory, seems to me to imply panpsychism.

I also like the idea of pandeism: That the universe is either infinitely recycling itself, or that it is a closed causal loop.

I've read nothing about post-structuralism but looking it up on wikipedia it doesn't sound like something I'd be particularly interested in. I like Philosophy of Mind and Ethics.

> John Howard, basically a right of center guy who was unpopular for introducing consumption tax (GST). He's since been vindicated by Australia's high living standards, low poverty, low crime and government support that is almost unparalleled in any similar democracy.
I see a problem of causation vs. correlation here. According to my theories, there is no way for a consumption tax to cause those things because only a free economy can cause those things (unless goods and services magically drop from the sky).
>All a result of more government revenue, it also helped us avoid being too impacted by the subprime mortgage crisis (although, like most countries we did have some investment in it. I may have put America as my favourite country but, seriously, fuck those idiots for that massive oversight).
The housing crisis is, according to my theories, 100% due to the government inducing a textbook example of an Austrian business cycle (as in, it perfectly mimics a business cycle described by the Austrian Theory of the Business Cycle): Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae inflating the supply of loans which were used to buy houses, and then when it was shown that the supply of loans didn't reflect the reality of the situation the boom went bust.
>I like meta-ethics. Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes is probably the most reasonable account of our source of ethics I've ever read. I also like David Hume. I think everyone likes the idea of being treated as an ends in and of themselves rather than merely as a means to an end.
I haven't read Leviathan or Hume, i have been putting it off for a long time because i have been reading other thinkers in western philosophy. Kantian ethics of course is easy to destroy by a reductio ad absurdum: I see no reason for thinking that ethical maxims are ends in themselves. Proof by assertion is not enough, of course.

Pandeism as mis-spelled Pantheism or as a new concept in itself? I can't see the difference between "the universe is god" and "the universe is a god that created the world and then didn't interact with it any more". Pantheism is in some sense the exact opposite of eternal recurrence, but only possible from when you already have a theroy of it. Pantheism is mostly interesting as an ethical point of view, namely, that we should focus on this world as much as we would focus on god. This alone is holy, noble, good, all-knowing, etc. Of course there are significant intuitive moral problems with this.

> I'm a big fan of panpsychism as a theory of mind, especially since it completely fucks with our ethical intuitions. Functionalism, the generally accepted theory, seems to me to imply panpsychism.

Panpsychism doesn't make any particular sense intuitively, do you have any arguments for why functionalism could imply panpsychism? Universalism in ethics is very un-ethical, because it has always produced the most brutality and slaughter in history. Attempts to institute communism, for example. Or the refugee crisis right now. Ethics is an extremely dangerous subject that everybody loves to use sloppy reasoning in. This is why moral anti-realism is extremely moral once you understand the motivation behind it.

>I've read nothing about post-structuralism but looking it up on wikipedia it doesn't sound like something I'd be particularly interested in. I like Philosophy of Mind and Ethics.

French post-modern sophistry. I enjoy them, even if i find them moronic. Maybe ironically enjoy them? The french linguist sassure had this thing structuralism where meaning was defined as how things relate to other things in a structure (see a similarity here to functionalism?) but then people went away from that because the structure must in some sense be meaningless, because it is based on language which is full of contradictions (my sophomoric understanding).

> there is no way for a consumption tax to cause those things because only a free economy can cause those things

Taxation doesn't necessarily restrict the economy. Unless you have a different definition of a free economy.

Pic related, it explains how wealth distribution works in Australia to make things relatively equitable. I suggest you stop drinking from the libertarian kool-aid and read up on why we have rulers in the first place. I don't necessarily disagree with anarchism, but libertarianism is the worst elements of both statism and anarchism. It's basically the richest people saying: We should abolish all laws except for the ones that say we can keep the property we've claimed. The book I mentioned, Leviathan, actually explains why kings are important, their function is to create social order. Libertarianism is basically arguing that 'we will create better social order if we don't force our king to create better social order' which I believe is absurd.

That's just scapegoating. EVERYONE was involved with the housing crisis. From debtors who didn't pay their creditors, to PRIVATE regulatory companies who accepted bribes to give AAA ratings to bad loans.

The government failed by not investigating it properly. However, if the government had MORE of an influence it would have had MORE power to investigate.

>I haven't read Leviathan

Do it. That's the actual redpill. Ayn Rand is not a serious philosopher.

>Pandeism as mis-spelled Pantheism or as a new concept in itself?

So, think of evolution. Not just by natural selection, but the evolution of chemistry (we started with JUST hydrogen, now we have all the elements of the periodic table some of which have been the result of human intervention). It seems to me there is progress when it comes to evolution. From what's known as a quark and gluon soup (before atomic particles even existed) matter has evolved to the point where we're on the precipice of strong AI. It seems logical to me that if evolution continues with this sort of progress eventually the universe itself will become God. I then submit that having nowhere to go God would annihilate itself and the whole thing would start over again.

Pantheism is like 'The universe directs and knows' Pandeism is more like 'We are the universe directing and knowing itself'.

>Panpsychism doesn't make any particular sense intuitively, do you have any arguments for why functionalism could imply panpsychism?

Functionalism is the idea that consciousness is a function of the brain and therefore could be a function of computers.

Why stop there, though? Computers are just matter and energy, so is the brain, so is the plumbing in your house, so is the Earth, so is the universe.

I submit that functionalists either believe consciousness arises ex nihilo, or that it is a primordial feature of all things. One is slightly more intuitive than the other, I think.

Social order is a result from social trust. The state both creates a surrogate for social trust and also destroys existing social trust to get more power (at the least, has an incentive to do so). The reason why taxes must necessarily restrict the economy is because they must of necessity be non-neutral. There are many reason for why they must be non-neutral. The biggest one is that it they decrease the amount individuals are willing to save (and thus how much the economy can grow) by ignoring that people save relative to how their time preferences are.

It is true that we have rulers to produce law and order, but there is no inherent reason for why rulers must necessarily be anti-market. I have no problems with an absolute monarchy that supports a free market. Libertarianism is a big intellectual tradition, so i can't claim to speak for all of it, but for my particular branch (propertarian minarchism): I support it because people by their very nature want to serve their needs, and the best way to serve everyone's basic needs so that they can get to a point of "higher" needs (spiritual needs) is to have a free market. There is nothing inherent in the market which says that the people who make the least money have to be poor, only that there will tend to be big inequalities in wealth distribution. Now, if a very unequal wealth distribution helps the poor and downtrodden, why shouldn't we have an unequal wealth distribution?

I think Ragnar Redbeards "Might is Right" is a much more red-pilled analysis of the state of nature than Leviathan, by the way. I have read enough secondary literature to know the general gist of the book. I'll read it anyways. Have you read Hans-Hermann Hoppe's "democracy the god that failed"?

>That's just scapegoating

It's "just" the ABCT explanation of the business cycle. All of those other things just follow naturally because people serve their own interests.

>The government failed by not investigating it properly. However, if the government had MORE of an influence it would have had MORE power to investigate.

The problem is that democratic governments are highly schizophrenic because multiple people have the power to make decisions that serve their own interest by the most powerful and seen-as-legitimate institution in society. If the government has more power to investigate, this means that people who have their own interests to serve have more power to do so, even if their interests contradict your interests. Since there is no way other than violent revolution (democracy doesn't work because of numerous reasons i'll get into later) to stop them from doing so, and because violent revolution is much more messy than just passively accepting the intrusions of these people on your interests, the government should have as little influence as possible in order that most peoples interests are served.

>>I haven't read Leviathan.
>Do it. That's the actual redpill. Ayn Rand is not a serious philosopher.

I have never been a Randian, nor have i ever thought her a serious philosopher. My philosophical origins are, if anything, based in Aristotle, Plato, Nietzsche, The Stoics, Spinoza and so on. Although i haven't discovered a dogmatic philosophy to follow yet. I am a seeker.

"Change to a goal" is what we call "teleology". It's the model Aristotle applies to analyze nature and humanity. While it still works for humans, it doesn't work for the natural world because there are significant decreases in progress in the history of the world, brought on by evolution. Evolution just means that the ones who manage to survive are the ones who manage to survive. They may be dumber, weaker, whatever; but just breed more. It's still evolution then. This smells very Hegelian, am i right here?

I needed more than 2 posts it turns out.

>Functionalism is the idea that consciousness is a function of the brain and therefore could be a function of computers.

Is this article on it acceptable? http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/functionalism/

What comes to mind here is "Monadology" by Leibniz, namely, that the 'simple' thing is consciousness and that the universe is an infinite collection of closed off consciounsesses ticking at the same rate so to speak because of a pre-established harmony ordained by god. I don't have enough background in the philosophy of mind to comment on this, but it seems like saying something is "primordial" weasels out of explaining in some way. What does it mean that it is primordial? Do we have any reasons to think that there is something 'outside' the mind in any sense? Can you imagine that?
>>
>>27441329

"Nature hath made men so equal in the faculties of the body and mind, as that, though there be found one man sometimes manifestly stronger in body or of quicker mind than another, yet when all is reckoned together the difference between man and man is not so considerable as that one man can thereupon claim to himself any benefit to which another may not pretend as well as he. For, as to the strength of body, the weakest has strength enough to kill the strongest, either by secret machination or by confederacy with others that are in the same danger with himself."

TL;DR: There are a lot of ways one can gain an advantage over another, and it's not necessarily because they're better equipped physically or intellectually. Bigger families are desirable the less social order there is because it means more allies. Social order is a result from social trust, and the social order I find myself in works to make sure the necessities of life are always guaranteed to me. Yet, there is still motivation for me to want more than the necessities because it's in our nature to be better and greater than we are.

> All of those other things just follow naturally because people serve their own interests.

Yes, which is why we've evolved into having powerful, yet self-regulating, entities that are ideally independent. AKA Government.

Also, if you believe that, what makes you think less wealth distribution will advantage anyone other than people who are better at producing their own personal wealth?

So you disagree with atomic theory?
>>
>>27441591
The thing you call an "atomon" today will not be an "atomon" tomorrow. We are always finding smaller and smaller pieces in the universe. It's best to keep physical speculation to the theoretical physicists and stay in the domain of philosophy.
>>
>>27441475
>The problem is that democratic governments are highly schizophrenic

You've gone on to describe one form of democracy.

The sort of gridlock you experience in the states is avoided when you have a governor-general.

>While it still works for humans, it doesn't work for the natural world because there are significant decreases in progress in the history of the world

Progress from a human perspective is not necessarily the same as progress from a universal perspective.

All I'm arguing is that the universe could be some sort of self-solving puzzle. Perhaps the universe, including all of time, is just an accumulation of every finite physical possibility and experience.

Experience to me seems fundamental. To me, idealism is just as valid as physicalism. Ultimately an objective reality is as likely to be an agreed upon reality rather than one that would exist without anything to experience it.
>>
>>27441639
Sure, but those smaller and smaller pieces either have a component that is a smaller and smaller piece of 'experience' 'consciousness' or 'qualia', or such things come from nothing,
>>

Yeah sorry i went to bed pretty much right after i made my post and couldnt reply because the thread was archived when i got back.
My favorite conspiracy theory is the one that ive been working on myself; it unifies many of the theories into a single massive conspiracy theory which claims that jews are behind it all. Well, not all of it, some of the theories are propably just bullshit, for example chemtrails and stuff being added into your drinking water to keep you dumb.

Why might they be true? Well for example in 9-11 the rescue workers reported hearing demolition charges from the towers.

In the large theory where jews are behind all the major plots leading to human suffering all you have to do is look at who controls the money and the media and what the bible says:

Revelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold,
I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

The bible prophecy told us that there would be people calling themselves jews and deceiving us. And look at the world today, "jews" own most of the media companies and control the money.

>Yes, which is why we've evolved into having powerful, yet self-regulating, entities that are ideally independent. AKA Government.

Governments are not self-regulating. You're seeing a very slow downward spiral. Governments will be incapable of meeting entitlement programs and are thus doing a myriad of further destructive things to aid this. This follows from Ludwig von Mises insight that the market will always tend to either complete capitalism or complete violent abolition of the market i.e "socialism" because every government intervention in the economy must of necessity fail, and if it fails you can either do the hard but working thing (remove the failed regulation) or the easy quick fix that will later require a harder and tougher fix or another quick fix in a finite spiral towards complete "socialism". It's better to do the right thing and take the burn now, than to have an even greater pain later.

>>27441649
How does it solve it? Bryan Caplan's arguments put forth against democracy in his book "The myth of the rational voter" seems to apply to this case too.

>Experience to me seems fundamental. To me, idealism is just as valid as physicalism. Ultimately an objective reality is as likely to be an agreed upon reality rather than one that would exist without anything to experience it.

I'm an idealist because the existence of the external world is an unnecessary hypothesis (using occam's razor). All you need is phenomena and the properties of phenomena. This might or might not imply solipsism. I haven't examined that route yet. I guess we agree on this point. So, does leibniz monadology solve this problem or not by making the world an infinite series of indivisible 'observations' of the world that are closed off from each other but 'synched' by a pre-established harmony?

Women are of course more in demand than men economically speaking because of evolutionary reasons. One woman can produce one baby over a span of 9 months at a tremendous risk to her health and productive capabilites, while a man can produce as many babies as he can find women. Thus, men will always be the more abused but also the more succesfull sex. There will be a lot of losers and a lot of failures.

But yes! Message me on something. I've never played Animal Crossing with another human, I didn't know that was a thing that could happen.

Oh wow thanks.

I haven't listened to Blink-182 or Sum 41 in years. My brother loved them and so did I.

Though I only knew about Nieve from Anonymous Agony streams and then I woke up and realized i liked his music legit. Death Grips was less "lol ironic memecore" though, I put on Get Got and it was kickass.
