Would I stop caring about the things I previously liked? Will my ambitions in life change? How would my interactions with my family change? Relating Autism to cancer is offensive and ignorant. Cancer is a terminal illness which if left untreated will kill the person who has it.
Cancer is disease which someone will develop at some point later in life and doesn't have naturally as part of their genes. Cancer had No advantages what so ever and is purely a negative condition to have.

As the parent of an autistic child, I don't think my son needs to be cured.
None of my son's behaviours are inherently harmful to himself or others. The only autistic trait of his that really inconvenienced me was his stimming behaviours affecting which room he slept in, what flooring we had,etc. His other traits were not inherently bad - they were just who he was and sometimes had surprisingly wonderful consequences. For the most part, the hardest part of my son being autistic was not the autism itself but the way people felt entitled to treat him.
OP there are people who are not tumblr people who think autism is just another aspect of humanity. We shouldn't all be forced to conform into a standard of what is an acceptable human being. Unless one's autism symptoms are hindering oneself or others, then it really isn't anyone's business. Being quiet, really liking specific topics, stimming, or being awkward are not crimes.

Literally every aspect of who you are in life comes with pros and cons.
If you're honest, you may be well-liked for your virture and reliability.....but you may also be too blunt and put yourelf in a bad situation that could have been avoided fi you just told a little white lie. You can apply this to bravery (recklessness), kindness (pushover), intelligence (pretentiousness), being funny (tactlessness), etc.
Even bad attributes can have their positives: hotheadedness (passion), laziness (efficiency), etc.
So there are certain traits that are more common in autistic individuals. Obviously in a society where autistics are not the majority those traits will sometimes pose a disadvantage (coping mechanisms inappropriate, "awkwardness"), but there are also many ways that autism could be beneficial.
Consider autistic people who made some great cultural achievement. Those achievements were not made in spite of autism, but through an experience defined by being autistic.

My point is that you cannot summarise a complex, multifaceted condition like autism - which has a spectrum of severity and symptoms - and say that it's all bad and without any benefits for the individual and society.

That goes without saying, but autist generally do have an advantage over NTs when it comes to some things. We have a better "eye" for details, we tend to either have incredibly high verbal IQs or visual. Having a high visual/spatial IQ can do wonders for someone interested in mathematics and physics.

Cured? No. Treated? Maybe. But don't give autists the chemical cosh, they need people to be patient and help them open up even just a little. When you're different, it's easy for others to pick up on that and either make you feel uncomfortable or straight up bully you. Over time this can be enough to make most people put up barriers and be all defensive. I was, but I was lucky to go to a special needs school where they helped me overcome the difficulites of my autism and the aversion to being open with people that results from being bullied. I'm still improving but if you knew me ten years ago you wouldn't recognise me. I can go out to the shops (I don't really like doing it though), talk to strangers if I have to, go to job interviewsgot a job starting thursday now. Not all autists will manage but many that have the potential don't always get the encouragement they really deserve.
tl;dr Autists need help to unlock their potential, not some cure.

I also was in special ed the whole time I was in school and was even in a small public charter special school for a few years in hs.
I luckily had/have relatively caring people who have helped me. I have had a job ever since I graduated hs. It's just a part time job that grew out of an internship my senior year of hs, but it's still a job and means that my resume looks fairly decent because there aren't any holes in it and I have shown I can keep a job for years.
