If my scalp was compliant I would go full no-water/sebum only.

This is why we use shampoo.
My hair looks similiar to a regular washers hair.
After the first fortnight-3 weeks your oil gland production stabilises.
You only need to keep washing your hair, because washing your hair causes more oil to be generated... which means you have to wash your hair... which causes more oil. Once you break the cycle you're fine.
It's why babies/toddlers, despite not having shampooed hair, do not have greasy hair - that is until the shampooing starts.
Yeah, greasy as fuck. You still need shampoo. What you need every shower is conditioner, shampoo every 3rd time or so, since shampoo strips away the natural oils. You do need it, just not necessarily every time.

Can confirm. Been washing my hair with just water for a year. First month is oily but that shouldn't be a problem if you're a robot. After that your scalp gets used to it. My hair is always soft and never greasy now. Give it a shot.

best is just using bar soap a couple times a week and conditioner. soap doesn't strip as much oils from your hair, but still cleans it. Shampoo is a detergent... not a soap.

DESU, first month you get a bit of an itchy scalp and it feels pretty gross. But once you're through it you're in god teir no shampoo territory and it's awesome.
I use only water, and I live off grid so it's rainwater filled with minerals and shit rather than chlorinated tap water.

There's a ton of resources out there for different haircare methods for afro hair. I'm haircare crazy, but white, so I'm only aware of them in terms of stuff that is just generally good for hair.
But there is so much shit out there for black hair. The natural haircare craze has produced so many more accessible products, and reviews, and routines...go...learn...make me jealous of the hairstyles you can do.

I used to have pretty bad dandruff too, since going off shampoo it's cleared up to the point I can wear a black shirt and scratch my head and not live in fear.
The first month for me was cap territory and just washing lots with water to keep it looking, well, not homeless. It looks upkept but not noticeably poor hygiene during that first period, you notice the oil when you touch it, then it just balances out and goes back to "normal".
