I think it might have to to with information consumption. The autism diagnoses correlate with increased info consumption if you look at trends in recent years. I think it might be a coping mechanism of a mind to deal with massive amounts of information, much of which is lies, bullshit, and of dubious truth.

I honestly think the numbers haven't changed at all, it's just way easier to see now because of the new routes of communication in the internet age. Also diagnoses definitely have increased more than they should've. You can literally just go to a psycho doctor and pay them money to diagnose you, then you get bonus exam time, autismbux etc.

I've got a weird theory, but hear me out.
It's caused by modern diets, but not in the way you would think. See, the development of our face, jaw and skull is dependent a lot on proper usage of said body parts.
Proper nutrition/diet leads to proper development of jaw, which leads to proper development of skull, thus optimal brain function. The whole craniofacial complex is VERY dependent on the development of the jaw. A jaw that is recessed will block airflow, resulting in worsened sleep, less athletic bodies, etc.
In addition to airflow structure, jaws affect the upper and anterior craniofacial development. This malformation of the skull, especially sphenoid, affects brain function.
So basically, soft foods=weak recessed jaws=bad airflow & malformed craniofacial development.
If anyone wants to look into this further (its actually really intersting stuff especially the way craniofacial development ties into everything, from your brain to your feet and spine) check out some simple reading on skeletal malocclusions and craniofacial development.

Most autism is most commonly diagnosed at around age three so I don't think it has much to do with information consumption. It has a large dependency on the age of the mother. And there are a large amount of women having kids post 40.

like I said earlier it's diet related.
wheat, barley, rye and oats - all things gluten - cause trouble during pregnancy. a brain and a heart can't grow properly from a lacking diet.
then there is the lack of minerals in the grounds. modern agriculture and the douchebags that govern it (monsanto for example) are the reasons there is no minerals in fruit, veggies or even lifestock because they have to eat said vegetation too.
you can't get by without vitamin and mineral supplements. minerals are especially important for brain functionality. if you don't have any, mental illnesses and complications are rising. hence why autism is on the rise and depression too. if you're not clinically dpressed you can at least curb some of the depression with minerals.
