Probably the only character I've ever liked in an MMO was LotRO's daughter of strife, Narmeleth, and she's probably only interesting because she subverts the fact that LotR is the original >muh corruption.

Steep learning curve but a very fun one especially if you have a friend doing it with you.
You feel very rewarded every time you level since it feels so difficult.
For classes just go a paladin or a hunter, those classes die the least, are very strong and will not require much help from other people during hard quests.

Paladin buffs are very OP if you want to clear raiding content quickly, that said every private server I have played on had a bugged out windfall totem which made melee players shit out ridiculous damage if they had skilled shamans in their parties for raids.
Also shamans usually have bugged out totems which makes raiding content way easier than it should be, horde is also more fun because gnomes are fucking gay, night elves are rubbery fairy faggots and humans are boring as shit. The race models for horde make the game feel more like a rag-tag team of outlawed misfits whereas alliance look like the midget (gnome) gay emo kid (night elf) and retard jock (human) plus slut (female human) were forced together into some breakfast club jamboree.

Former Australian Nost player here. The latency is unfortunately quite bad (~350 ping). However, this is only a problem if you intend to play PvP intensely. If you want play PvP, do not play a melee class or else you'll constantly be out of melee range. As a mage, it's quite easy to get used to the ping. But that disadvantage against other players will always be there.
Also, time zone differences mean that you won't be able to raid with most guilds. Try to find an active Australian guild on the forums before playing, so you don't already start on the opposite faction.
Give classic WoW a go before retail. It's free, you may as well.
