Being raped used to be a death sentence for women, because no one would ever marry them, because no one married adulterers of any kind.

Actually, it isn't common knowledge because it isn't actually a form of knowledge. It hasn't been proven that rape causes mental illness because there are many women who are raped and either don't care that much or end up forming an addiction/fantasy about it because rape is the number one female fantasy.
The only thing correlated with mental illness is "how the victims are treated by society." The labeling of them as a rape victim and taking away their humanity is what causes issues. The constant bombardment of pity, sadness, etc. make them messed up.
