Actually there's more live boys than girls, substantially more.
It's an effect of the inherent disposability of boys. The sex ratio reaches parity around middle age and then massively skewers female because of men dying off to alcohol, suicide, work accidents, etc.

1.07 males:1 female birth ratio. Men start dying off significantly more when they are elderly, this tips the ratio to near 1:1.

It's because you don't notice undesirable females. They are basically invisible to men, even to those who aren't the best-looking guys themselves either.

Kek. They must literally be the most useless, worthless things on the planet.
They're old.
Almost all young women are taken, because even if a young woman is ugly, she can still usually make babies. Men know this and will go after her. But once a woman hits 40 or so, she's not attractive anymore. So a lot of 40+ year-old women are single.
I'm sure that despite most women in their 20's being in relationships, you've met quite a few crazy cat ladies. Older women rarely get attention from men, but young women get tons of it.
