Don't pay even a dollar. They will write it off but if you've even acknowledged the debt it's unlikely they'll write it off. Credit is useless in America anyway. Just buy what you need. A good car is $30k tops, rent is $2k/mo tops. Buying is a bad idea financially speaking, but if you want a house for emotional reasons just save. Short of Manhattan or a castle it can't be more than $300k. Really in a city or suburb you can rent. Owning only kind of makes sense in rural areas. Land is $10k an acre and you can build or contract the house yourself.

Got pushed into college my my parents and didn't know what path to go, decided to stop until I know what I want to do.
Been paying off my debt ever since, I only racked up $6k and will have it paid off soon enough. I can't imagine having six times that though... you'll be paying that off for the rest of your life.
