I work at a hospital, today we had an obese gentlemen who came in dead on arrival via ambulance. When he sat on his computer chair, because of his weight, he caused the gas lift system to explode, sending a couple bits of metal straight up through the bottom cushion and into his bowels, he died within 10 minutes of the call.

Yes and they have a small hole in them which was cracked, that's how your levers work. If you don't believe me pull your chair apart and have a look, on the top of your gas lift there is a button, that button has to be on the top and has to be free of obstruction.
If your chair has a full metal plate, it isn't a gas lift chair.

See the button on top? There is a hole in your metal plate which that sits in. That button has to be free of obstruction, thus, if it explodes it will crack the hole and come up through you.
Office chairs that have a gas lift actually have a weight rating on them. Most of the time, they're rated for approx 250 lbs, give or take. So if you weigh 400 lbs and you sit on a chair rated for 250 lbs, you have nobody to blame when it breaks except yourself.
Note, they DO make "big and tall" chairs that are rated for more than the usual 250 lbs. Usually those are rated for 350 lbs, maybe even 450. If you weigh more than 450 lbs, then I'm sorry to say but you need to go on a diet.
I'm not even going to go into the possibility of the hydraulic cylinder shooting through an iron plate, plastic plate and cushion.
