I used to have it pretty bad before I lost weight. Had to take Prilosec every day. After the weight loss, the acid reflux disappeared. But now that I gained back 10 lbs, I'm starting to experience it again.
tl;dr: Most likely you need to lose weight. The fat around your stomach is literally forcing acid back up your esophagus. This isn't always the case of course, I've known skinny people with it.

I did until I had gastric bypass. GERD and Barrett's Esophagus at the age of 23. I had a few endoscopies and my Barrett's came back with positive results for pre-cancerous cells so the fastest way to stop the acid completely was by detaching my stomach and stopping the acid completely : ^ )

Going under is a fucking great feeling. Whenever I'd been sedated with anything except Propofol, I wake up in the middle of the procedure literally choking and trying to rip it the tube out of my throat :( That happened 6 times before they realized to actually give me good sedation.
When they use the right sedation though it's so good and you wake up refreshed and happy.
