Been stuck on this album. I listened to it in high school and thought it was weird as fuck.
Just recently gave it a relisten after completely forgetting about the album and man, it's a ride.The entire album is about the lead singer's druggy friend and his descent into madness within his coma dreamworld. The lyrics are extremely obtuse and 2deep4u, but the story paired with the music is pretty atmospheric.

Not that guy, but you have to look at music as a collection of various sounds produced by various instruments. Language kind of loses it's meaning under that definition.
Besides, a song that is well-written with powerful lyrics and catchy instrumentals will transcend the barrier of language.
You gotta aim to understand the "emotion" or "feeling" of the song rather than the direct definition of the lyrics.

Did you actually listen to the song? You didn't, because that song doesn't have any lyrics it is entirely instrumental.
Generally speaking though people either do that because they're trying to learn whatever language, or because they don't care about the lyrics that much. If you ever listen to a song in a foreign language you generally get to appreciate the voice as an instrument more than a native speaker would because you're not listening tot he meaning of the words, just the sounds of the voice.

I love ambient, and I don't have anything terrible to say to metal itself, though I only listen to drone metal.
On the topic of ambient, I've recently become interested in impressionist music. Satie's "Gymnopedies" are considered to be a precursor to modern ambient. They're just piano pieces, but if your interested I'd definitely rec a listen of pic related. It's Gymnopedies and some of Satie's other works as played Pascal Roge, and expert of the genre
