I first got the internet in May 2002 as a kid, but feel free to talk about 90s shit too.

Newgrounds was and still is pretty shit.

It was a place for the punk-dumbass kids to hang out and make things that they enjoyed. Since it was 1 of the few content creators, whatever it had created pretty much became the staples of the Internet's culture

Now it seems to be filled with the "to cool for you" group.
>>

Newgrounds was the shit between 2003-2007
>>

>Now it seems to be filled with the "to cool for you" group.
Have you ever actually been to Newgrounds, now or in the past, whatsoever?
>>
>>27331876
Yes. And I will still stay that is the vibe it gives off nowadays
>>
>>27331825
Newgrounds gave into the PC crowd taking down 1/2 of the old content.
>>
>>27331876
2007 was like the beginning of the end. It's been discussed before.

2007 was the beginning when internet got more accessible and mainstream, gaming became pretty mainstream
2008 was the beginning of social media booming and a lot of other 'nerdy' things becoming mainstreams, nerd culture becoming a thing
2009 was when it all kicked off. Everyone had a facebook, twitter got big, wi-fi, everyone just had the internet. Older people and companies started jumping on the social media bandwagon.

I'd say around 2012 was when memes started frequently being used in every day use and a lot of this whole 'Millennials and instant gratification' talk began.
>>
>>27331887
That was a rhetorical question m8
It's obvious that you were banned from newgrounds because your parents deemed it too risque and now you're blind from eating too many sour grapes

Newgrounds is effectively dead nowadays
Not very many animators or game designers use it because there are better platforms

>>27332070
You can literally tie gaming going mainstream around halo, wow, gta 3, and call of duty modern warfare era. Although most of these games were pretty great, they were highly successful to the point where every gaming exec said to follow suite on these games for their genres. Wows changes managed to kill an entire genre, though I blame corporate thinking to reach a wider audience more than the games themselves. I don't think any genre has really recovered from the copy successful games meme.
Over ten years later I'm still waiting for a company to release an mmo that focuses on its fan base and maintaining its community standards over pulling in every average Joe.
>>
>>27332249
MMOs are dead, all the big corporations moved onto MOBAs in an attempt to copy that instead, causing its oversaturation and eventual death.

I also first got the internet in 2002 around that time

as a 17 year old

I used to have to go to the library and get a scheduled half-hour of internet there, print out web pages and then later read them at home like a magazine. Newgrounds was one of the first sites I came accross, through a random black kind in school actually, and then found out about Seababy through EGM magazine.

At first, just willpower.

Then, my older sister's Archie comics. Nothing like Betty and Veronica and all those other side bitches taking a day off at the beach.

I did occasionally take a Sears catalog or Wal Mart flyer to toss in the bathroom as well if the Bra models weren't too old.

Also once a week there would be a softcore/erotic movie playing on a local TV station, since we didn't have cable.

I didn't know what a vagina properly looked like until we got the internet at home. I WISH I was a kid or teen living in 2016.

It's always fun to freak people out when there's discussion about stuff like say... how people were able to watch anime subbed on Youtube in 2006 and thats how they discovered anime at age 10 and someone says they're underage b& then you reveal that's 20 years old.

Also there are high schoolers who can't remember 9/11, there are middle schoolers who weren't even born then. There are teenagers who can't remember the internet without Youtube. There are eighteen year olds who have never had dial up internet.
>>

This shit right there destroyed me... I played a lot in middle school, private servers and all those shit... During holidays I'd play more than 16 hours straight a day for two weeks, when I got in HS I started playing again... Like a few hours every single day, almost all day long on week ends...

I've become so disgusted that even 3 or 4 years later I still can't play mmos for more than an hour straight.

Yeah a few people in this thread have said how kids these days have it easier when it comes to finding porn but if anything it's worrying because they're subjected to all this stuff that it becomes dull. Like the fact that I had to make do with a slow loading image to get off meant that I wasn't constantly searching for porn, vanilla stuff had to do, and at that age, vanilla stuff would do me fine, even a bit of light underwear action. Now it's easier to search for the dominatrix stuff, all in like pornhub and xvideos, so they're subjected to that stuff right off the bat. What happens when that gets dull? And so on and so forth.

Obviously underwear action doesn't get me off that much now, but it was a natural progression, unlike where it would be now where it's like BAM hardcore sex off the bat. Hope this is making sense, I'm feeling like it's not.

There are a few free shards that have consistent numbers. The majority of the official shards are dead or mostly dead. It's all about finding the right people though, which is hard to do because a large percentage of people who RP are mentally unstable.

As far as I know, UO is currently the best MMO available for RP. Most other games are pure shit in that regard.

Yeah it's why I can't agree they have it 'better' porn wise when it's gonna fuck them up later on in life probably and skewer their perceptions. I mean I was introduced to porn through the internet at a young age too but again, with speeds at the time it was a simple slow loading picture of a pair of tits, nothing hardcore. It was essentially the same thing you'd fine in a playboy that every young person would wack off to before the internet, except more accessible.

But now, the harder stuff is more accessible in an instant from a young age.

The Flash animation/game community was really something unique. You had tons of people animating cartoons and making games purely for its own sake. Creativity purely for creativity's sake. That type of community and genuine interest will never be seen online again.
You never know what you have until it's gone. I'd give anything to go back.

>2006: Get into WoW, don't get hooked as everyone else did, but I start online gaming more - Between WoW, Adventurequest/BattleOn and Maplestory. Not on any forums anymore, still sometimes on Habbo, start watching Youtube videos, mostly animu
>2007: Get into .hack, go on a .hack forum and watch animu on Youtube, weeb phase, go back on Gaia, still play WoW, discover 4chan
>2008: Stop playing WoW. Still on gaia, get onto Myspace and start using Stickam and BlogTV, start using 4chan more, /b/tard phase, be a part of raids and stuff
>2009: Start going on /x/, start playing BYOND games like SS13, other than that still the same as before.
>2010: Still the same as before but now exploring more boards, move on from /b/
>2011: Start playing City of Heroes, get really into it, RP on it and such. Start going on /r9k/ though I don't think it's long until /r9k/ goes away for a long while
>2012: CoH shuts down, it sucks cause I loved it. Try Champions Online, not as good, /r9k/ gets replaced with /soc/ at this point? I make a Skype.

That's essentially my internet life from 02 - 2012.

It's crazy how massive of a change and boom the internet went through from like 2007 - 2009, then a massive societal change in 2010 - 2011 where the internet was integrated into stuff like news and talk shows and became such an ordinary part of life.

1/2

>2000
Great year. The 90s had only just ended and were still fresh in everyone's mind. No social media, no smartphones, no memes, no social justice psychos or the reactionary psychos associated with it. Economy was better, Internet was great, video games were great. We weren't involved in any major wars, it was the new millennium and there was a sense that the future could only get better.

>2001
Most of it was similar to 2000, until 9/11 came along and ruined things. September onwards was different, noticeably more miserable.

>2002
Stuff like Internet, games and such were still good for the most part. But the "War on Terror" was starting and people were now more afraid and on edge.

>2003
More war, but the economy was still semi-stable. Golden Age of Flash animation/games started. Video games continued to be decent.

>2004
Same as 2003.

>2005
Youtube comes on the scene, it's Golden Age starts. Some people are now wondering when we're getting out of the Middle East.

>2006
Golden Age of Youtube continues. PS3, Wii, and the 360 begin to casualize video games and social media is slowly growing.

>2007
The major tipping point. Social media is now getting big, smartphones exist now, more casuals are getting into video games. Middle East crap still going on.

2/2

>2008
Worst year of the decade. Economic crisis, Obama gets elected, liberals and their psycho conservative counterparts rear their heads. Games continue to get worse, the Flash community is now slowly dying.

>2009
Slightly better than 2008, but not by much. Video games are worse, traces of the social justice movement are now around, and we've now been at war for 8 years.

>2010-now
Somehow turns out to be even worse than 2008, and makes the 2000s look great by comparison. Less and less people with jobs. Even more war, which we've pissed away more than a trillion dollars for. Internet is garbage, video games are mostly garbage. Smartphones, memes and social media everywhere. The women are mindless sluts, the men are drooling idiots. Liberals are psychotic, conservatives are psychotic. Political horseshit everywhere, no privacy, mass surveillance, race relations worse than they've been in a long time, crumbling economy. The worst era in recent history.

>2020s (Prediction)

Even worse than the 2010s. Makes the 2010s look semi-okayish, the 2000s look awesome, and the 90s look like paradise. We will see things in this decade that are completely horrifying and unthinkable right now. Nothing can prepare us.
