Because most western culture demands you be the best, demands that you are in the right of things. Demands that you must serve your faction of thought and cannot simply exist together because that opens up the fear you might have made seriously poor life choices. So we forge enemies, we make foes out of those that challenge our school of thought, and in the worse of times it raises to violence because we see silencing our dissenters as the ultimate proof we were in the right and our lifestyle is the best.
