The problem with the Internet and especially in 2016 is that there really are genuine "shills", as in people who post on boards or make content for the sole purpose of manipulating discourse and shaping the public consciousness, and some of them are even paid by special interest groups so a lot of people have become rather paranoid about everything. I agree that it's become tiresome and horribly overused, though.
