A diamonds toughness isn't as great as its hardness, if you have a nice big diamond and smash it with a big mace it will fracture and eventually break, just like if you shoot, it might absorb it and make the bullet bounce off or eventually shatter and push the diamond into you along with the bullet
why not just make bulletproof vest out of mirrors so that bullets reflect off instead of actually making impact?
