What? The Narrator shoots himself to prove to Tyler that he is free and can see the world clearly which makes Tyler disappear.
Marla was just sort of there.
Does it happen differently in the book?
Should I read the book?

Not him, but I read the book and watched the movie, and in both cases Marla contributes heavily to Jack's (I'll just call him that) transformation and eventual liberation. If you think about it, Marla is the one thing that makes him finally notice that him and Tyler are one and the same. Not only that, but the relationship they develop is what gives Jack a sense of purpose, like she was his only anchor to a real and reasonable world.

The book ends in a psych ward.
