You know like 2006?
>4chan newer and less filled with shit posters
>people actually customized their computer theme for fun
>Windows XP(still the best)
>shitty flash cartoons and games we all loved
>no let's plays
>AVGN was the best
>Classic YouTube
>YouTube poops
>no Tumblr
>no Reddit
>life was good on the internet
>no phone posting

Who else's missed the old comfy internet?

Ever since it got mainstream from social networking everything has to look and be all corporate and professional and too much people use it now

I just miss 2006 because I was still naive and happy.

Myspace really kicked off around that time and led to the overabundance of social media that we have now.

There are, however, some great things about today's internet.

>faster internet speed
>superior netflix
>streaming sites like watchcartoononline.com and putlocker
>way more information in general
>steam isn't buggy as fuck
>no longer have to apply to most jobs in person
>no need for shitty limewire, kazaa, eMule, etc...

I'm sure there's more.

You gotta take the good with the bad. If you went back in time, there would be things you miss about modern internet. It's just that people take those things for granted.

What's the most fucked about this is that a 700:1 attention ratio causes them to massively undervalue men. They no longer feel an attraction to men, but they are obsessed with the power their worship brings.

It hurts to think about how the balance of SMV has shifted so astronomically.

No, it won't. This is why the meme cycle continues. People opt for a guaranteed positive outcome from an already accepted social cue.

What you see in a world without streamlined memes is that people are willing to have cringy, yet original, contributions. They can type what's on their mind without concern as to whether that contribution will get them shunned.

That might sound like a healthy aversion, but it stifles creativity in the long run by removing the incentive to gradually coalesce your embarrassing individual aspects with a sense of discipline and respect. Unfortunately, the internet has made people self-conscious, and this has dragged reputations into the center of every conversation.

It's very late and I'm rambling and I forgot why I started this, but I'm just trying to put my finger on how there was a time when girls could enjoy something without looking over their shoulder every 5 seconds to see if its getting them attention.

>>
>>27301392
The problem isn't the Internet, it's social media's explosion in popularity. Pre-2008 Internet was better and less obtrusive.

Back in 2007, social media drama and memes bleeding into real life was mostly unheard-of.

>no let's plays
That's bullshit bud, people just called them walkthrough's back then.

There used to be this fat fuck I used to watch back in like 2005/2006 called cloud something who was quite famous on youtube, but fucked himself over after people started shitting on him for asking for money. Nowadays nobody gives a shit about let's players or video game-playing roasties asking for money, there's always dumb people and beta orbiters who will shower them in cash, but back then people got pissed off.

He also threatened to close his channel a bunch of times and got into a bunch of youtube drama, where he would usually get BTFO. I think he eventually closed his channel and disappeared into oblivion.

From what I remember when I was like 12 his videos were pretty comfy and he had decent commentary, he would usually walkthrough the old Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and Siren games or other psychological horror type games.

I wonder what became of him. He would probably be rich now if he hadn't been so dumb.

I can't escape the feeling that's never actually going to die. As far as I'm concerned, the worst thing about the modern internet isn't Facebook or Twitter, it's how self aware and up its own ass everything is. Even on an anonymous Vietnamese shitposting website, everyone is too afraid of looking silly to ever have fun without hiding behind 7 different layers of smug, obnoxious irony.

>>27301027
It's not that strange. A lot of older stuff is still perfectly accessible (it's easier to see movies from 1975 now than it was back in 1975), but due to the nature of the internet that whole world is just... gone. I went on a bit of a nostalgia trip a few weeks ago. It brought me honest to god joy that killfrog.com is still up. I nearly cried when I watched Dad's Home for the first time in a decade. But it also reminded me of how much of the stuff I used to love has been lost. Not only can you not experience it like it was intended to, you can't experience it period.

The internet is like a city that burns to the ground every 5 years or so and is completely rebuilt, with nothing left of it's former self but tiny scraps scattered here and there. Maybe the new buildings are taller and shinier. Maybe the new trains run a lot better. Maybe the streets are even safer. But every time you see a remnant of the bad old days you're reminded that even if you'd rather live in the new city- and you're not even sure you want that- you can never even visit the old one.

As time went on, more and more people started to reveal thoughts they kept to themselves to the internet and as people agreed, those thoughts became acknowledged and accepted.

Just those general bad thoughts people used to push to the back of their mind to be at peace, like the ones that held marriages together, or the ones that kept the definition of racism from becoming a matter of opinion.

When those thoughts became accepted and socialized, it also became acceptable to act on them, and eventually people began to borrow the conscience of others.

This will be the beginning of our creative bankruptcy.

All I saw were a couple dozen middle-aged Japanese animators in a sweaty, crowded room making a short-term anime they didn't really care about for mediocre pay knowing they'd get made fun of on their way home that night for being ugly and eating salty ramen for dinner before falling asleep to the thought that the anime lives they illustrate are a lie they will never live

Yes I used to chat to a Canadian girl that I met from there. That was 2007. It's weird to think about. I don't know what happened to my account, I abandoned it I think.

It's weird but the website is still going on, which is extraordinary when you think about it. A lot of social media websites that popped up in the 2000s went defunct after a short while.

the worst part about nostalgia is that I objectively know that at the time I was hating life.
I can remember being in pretty much the same situation I am now. I had no girls ever. I had few friends. I was weird and outcast. Anxious and depressed.
I played video games most of the time. I watched a lot of TV. I wasted time with friends who were just as cool as me.

I had a few rare shining moments of normalcy but for the most part these "best days of my life" never were a reality. I was always looking ahead to the future in them, thinking things would be better once I was 16, or 18, or 21.

Well now I'm 25 and they're worse than they were at the time. It's not that life didn't live up to my expectations. It's that something that at the time seemed like a shitty situation is such a vast fucking improvement over my daily life.
Since I turned 21 every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. And all from 12-20 I was still feeling the tfwnogf feels.

I am nostalgic for a time that I know I hated. What does that say about my present situation?
>>
>>27302354
I don't think it's solely nostalgia for me. I can remember being miserable in the early 2000s. But that was school-related. There was a sense that everything was going to be great and I remember that. Also the internet seemed more frivolous back then. I was a teenager too so that probably contributed to my perception of everything being magical back then.
>>
>>27302428

Man, that really hits home.

I went through the same thing, and now at age 28, I look back on those times as something vastly superior to the life I'm living now despite it being only really being marginally better.

I guess it's nice to know that I'm not alone.
>>
>>27302428
I feel that too. I KNOW I was miserable during those times. It's not like I was self aware of the "fantastic" TV shows and internet culture or whatever. I'd be watching whatever show while staring off into space in misery, but when it's past I think "ZOMG so good! I didn't know what I had!"

This is probably the hardest feel for me. I remember the days of being able to talk to girls on the internet fondly. They didn't have some astronomical amount of other men contacting them simultaneously. I was being to hold their attention and develop meaningful relationships as a result. Now, I have to compete with a ridiculous amount of men to even have a conversation with a woman today.
I wondered if I was just better looking or more interesting in the past, but this isn't the case. I'm in the best shape of my life and I developed tons of new hobbies/talents. It's just hard for me to deal with the grind of web 3.0 social networks when in the past I used to be able to easily connect with girls in the past. Whatever, I guess I'm just entitled, lol

The internet of '04-'07 was pretty comfy and the internet was a separate entity. No the internet has merged with real life. Remember the days when there were warnings about posting personal info online?

Anyone also notice how the internet is becoming policed to fuck these days? Ten years ago you called someone a faggot and that was that, forgotten within 30 seconds. Do the same today and you run the risk of having the cops knock your door and being landed a charge of harassment or something.

I miss the older internet where softcore porn was gold, normies were non existent and the internet was left as it's own entity.

This, convenience is good but it kills a lot of the enjoyment

For example, compare how exciting it was to anticipate playing a game or watching a movie when you actually had to go out and buy it vs now where you can just click a download button and play

E-mails are convenient but they just don't compare to a handwritten note in how it makes you feel

When the world was small and it took longer to get anywhere traveling the country was a grand adventure, imagine how the people felt back in the 1800s going on a train ride at 5mph to foreign lands, now we have multiculturalism and globalism which is great in its convenience but it blurs the line between cultures, why travel when you can get the same thing here?

+1. Ability to access internet anywhere 24/7 was the final blow. It makes me sad, because now it's so obvious that most people have given up trying to interact with other human beings when given the chance. They aren't ashamed, they just don't care and show it openly.

This to an extent.

But I don't entirely agree with emails.
Before social media, etc normalised internet communication, things like email weren't nearly as instantaneous.
Protocols like POP actually meant that meant that a person might only check their account once a day (or even less). Now that the internet is so ubiquitous, people can get push notifications the second a message is sent.

I can remember receiving email from the school councillor (one of a few people I actually talked to at school) on a family friend's computer. I literally jumped up in excitement every time I got one.

I think things like Email (especially at the time) got the balance right.
It wasn't *too* slow or difficult, but it wasn't *too* easy or accessible.

>>27302971
I personally disagree with you, but that's okay because people can disagree with each other while still respecting their viewpoints :)))))))
>>
>>27301055
I can relate. Some of my old fandoms from when I was a teenager lived off sites like angelfire. Now most of them are dead and even some of the archives fail to save all the content like fan art for example.

Bullshit.

Perhaps every interesting idea for a site that could be done has been done or we just grew tired

Now you know why weebs have massive storage and save everything.

yes, the media's campaign to normalize facebook caused the entire internet to explode.

Well, I save a lot of shit because all the things I like tend to disappear from the internet.
Yet some personal information I posted many years ago is still readily available.

It fucking sucks.
At the same time I keep looking for good ways to store data, harddrives die sometimes, CD's can rot away, tapes seem good but the hardware is expensive and I'm not sure how to manage it.
I can always print out images and text that I want to store long-term but what about music or videos?
>>
>>27312000
use a program like rsync or synctoy to create a backup onto an external harddrive / server and connect to a webdav / cloud to back it all up in 'the cloud' too.
>>
>>27311767
Is this accurate?
Would explain why it got so shit
>>
>>27312000
Same with you I same a bunch of stuff from old games with dead fanbases. It's a fun hobby of mine and I think it's cool that one day I can meet an old fan again and say "hey look I actually have that picture you made."

As far as the graph, the hard stats are up on WEF (as noted in the lower righthand corner)

What i'm saying has been pretty well documented too. Read all the partnerships from '06-11 on wiki and google search( originally a darpa project) it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook#2006.E2.80.932011:_public_access.2C_Microsoft_alliance_and_rapid_growth

There is a huge vested interest in social media from the government, news organizations, businesses and of course facebook. Press organized what is called a norms intervention in order to get lay people using the site because they were being offered money, consumer data which would help them write stories, advertisement, do public opinion polls etc.

smartphones definitely had some to do with it too, but if you notice the first iphone came out in 07 and the line continued to stagnate another year.
>>
>>27312714
if you go on google trends you can see similarities in the rise of the bell curve to the graph i posted too (note the numbers are %ages from the top not figures)

The best thing about the "old" internet was the increased anonymity, basically everything was posted through a persona and it was generally understood that what people posted online wasn't connected to their actual life or identity. Also the majority of Web was ran by passionate small companies or individuals, not the few big corporations who basically own the internet.

I wouldn't say the internet culture today is worse, but it is definitely different.
>>
Anyone else here go on the clearnet? Its pretty comfy aside from the weirdos. Kinda like the old internet.
>>
>>27312904

This. I saw some faggot on youtube call another poster a coward for having an alias. You're just a fucking retard if you get a google account under your real name and with an actual foto.

yeah I do. the internet had a certain feel back then, like you were connecting to a different world. also my friends and I would watch porn for 4-5 hours straight together when we were 13. fuck yeah.

something in society stalled the progression, maybe it was the economic crash and Obama which was the first breakout of SJWs, and then it turned into the sat 8 years of politics and happenings that we all know well about, leading to the tense an devotional election cycle this year

I know that feeling, but in part i knew it could have been better and I could have indulged more in the culture, , but you know, sheltering and strict parents, which are pretty common for robots

thats why i turned to larding history and following the news so much, giving so much thought that I can post this

yeah, i have no life, but at least i understand why I and people like me don't

I mostly miss Homestarrunner.com

After I beat the game and the site updates basically went to a screeching halt, I knew a part of my life was over
>>27300319

I remember when I first found that on newgrounds, still a classic.
>>
>>27300670
I still go on Newgrounds all the time, I still go on there to post my crap.

This was my first taste of porn as a kid. Now boobs always make me nostalgic and giggle a bit.

I know how you feel, my father was starting to get abusive during that time and was fucking other women in front of me and my mother.

"Every day the future gets a little darker, but the past, even the grimy parts of it, just keep getting brighter and brighter".

Things will get better, though, I'm married and I'm perusing a career I like, even though I hate my current day job.

so here is a question?

what is the next internet?

what is the next big thing?

and don't tell me 3d printing

I'd imagine "the internet of things" or whatever it's called where everything you can think of is connected to the internet.

Virtual reality senpai. It's an expensive and one-trick pony meme at the moment, but in a decade or just five years I'm sure it will reach Sword Art Online levels of immersion
>>
>>27315881
I'd hate for the real world to be that shit though
>>
Websites today look really simple, but take 10 years to load.
>>
>>27315861

honestly that sounds depressing, it only sounds cool in a fantastical cyberpunk megacity

not shitty SJW suburbia leftover from the 90s and early 2000s

its only going to be used to collect data and control our lives more, not liberate them, sure uber and lyft is a phenomenal exception, but the rest, i just have abad feeling

>>27315881

VR will be good for games, if we have time to play them, but again I feel society is already in a split and all practical VR applications will allow normies, chads and the elites (Chads come from elites families BTW) to further pull away from the rest of us

I feel future developments of the internet will only result in diminishing returns

the internet empowered us and balanced everything, now it is going to tip in their favor and we are helping create it
