Fitness? Self-defense? Competition? You can learn Tai Chi as long as the teacher and school are legit.

Stop listening to all these faggots and dont go for any of that mystical shit. If it looks too flashy then it doesnt work. Take a lot of trial classes at different gyms and try to research some martial arts. If they spar often then its probably pretty legit and also you want to check out the instrunctors' credentials. You can find various martial arts places that arent too sport oriented but i feel the ones that arent for competition tend to be too autistic trying to do impractical things you'd have to just get lucky to find a legit self defense place that isn't a mcdojo.

You want to learn a full-body striking martial art like Muay Thai, and a trow/takedown defense martial art like Judo or Sambo. You can even join a sporty MMA gym as a last resort if you can't find those other martial arts I mentioned. If you join a karate school make sure that it is Kyokushin. Just make sure that the place you think of joining isn't a McDojo.

For traditional martial arts:
-Teacher doesn't list his own teachers' lineage
-Teacher will have claimed to have trained under "many masters" while not actually naming a single one
-Doesn't even have a proper style, it's just generic "karate" or "kung-fu"
-Kids with brow/black belts and just being a belt factory in general
-If the school does claim a style, it's not associated with that style's national or international federation/organization
For modern MMA Gyms
-It shares the same space as a women's yoga studio or something
-Same as traditional martial arts, the teacher doesn't say where he got his training or makes very vague claims
-Will try to capitalize on the UFC name even fi they have no affiliation
-It's one guy overseeing all the different martial arts from boxing to jiu jitsu, and maybe he has like 20 year old assistant teachers.
Also in either case, the head teacher/sensei will look like your average high school phys ed teacher or football coach with his "I haven't done a sit up in 20 years" fat stomach.
