Almost 25 years and counting.
It can be really awkward, or it can be really nice. With my current GF our first date went really well. We saw The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly in a theater, then went to a Bertucci's and talked about the movie and our lives / interests. I was really surprised to find myself conversing like a reasonable person rather than constantly at a loss of what to say, which was my usual state talking to people I wasn't already friends with. I guess how I'd describe the feeling of the date was (1) being happy to be interested in what she was saying, and happy that she was interested in what I was saying, (2) relieved that I wasn't making an ass of myself, and (3) hopeful that she'd want to go for a second date.

If you're just getting to know someone, you have a ton more to talk about. Basically every topic is new ground, so it's a lot easier to make conversation.
