What about the issue of why a person wants to be a different sex? Is the healthiest path really promoting the idea of hormones and genital mutilation or is it a cop-out in lieu of known better options? In the latter case you can appreciate how the former hinders the finding of better solutions. While gender is obviously biological, the social construct nature of gender is unarguable. Take for example androgynous people. In a public space, they can be taken for either gender. A lot of little boys who act or look girly can be mistaken for girls, and so may take steps to look more male.

It is enough for many trans people to have the world see them as the other gender.
