I was poor growing up and rarely got to have things. I also grew up with six to eight other kids my own age living in the same house at any given time, so anything I did have was rarely "mine".
Surrounding myself with things I like make me feel comfortable and like I've "made it". Shopping for those things is fun because you anticipate the comfort whatever you're going to get will bring. Even if it lets you down after you buy it, when you were shopping for it, there was still happiness.

Being a woman is being fundamentally dissatisfied with everything you have right now. There needs to be a constant intake of new things to keep from going crazy being surrounded by stuff that just isn't good enough anymore.

It's because I/people who collect things don't see it as garbage, even if it's something other people think of as useless.
Collecting doesn't necessarily mean hoarding. I can throw out things I don't want that don't bring me happiness or comfort, but I still have a lot of things.
I can understand minimalism, but I know it's not for me. Probably goes back to growing up poor and having something to prove, like I said. If I tried a minimalist life, I'd always be self-conscious, asking myself how many degrees of separation are there left between myself and my family of drug addicts living on a blanket, squatting in houses with no appliances? I know there's clean, comfy and sleek minimalism, but it'd always remind me of poverty.
