Lolita was such a refreshing look at love. Romantic literature always seems to be the same, even in Jane Eyre really, and Lolita showed the sordid, disgusting side of it that had previously been too taboo. Then there's the almost musical prose, the sort that would perfectly fit a typical love story, in contradiction to what it shows.

The Bible I like just because of historical impact, and stories like that of Job are actually really good.

My grandfather used to have an African Grey before he died and we were really close, so she stays with me now. Beautiful creatures.

I only actually became vegetarian a few years ago. I was thinking about what makes humans people. At what point does a human stop becoming a human. If you cut of it's limbs, or deform it physically beyond recognition, it's still a human. If you give it brain damage, or it's born retarded, it's still human despite having the mental capacities of a rock. Why, then, is it that animals belong in some different category. I don't see a distinction between a cow and a human, one is just less mentally and emotionally capable and physically different than the other and, clearly, that's not what makes us human, otherwise psychopaths, retards and cripples would not be human. In my eyes, eating animals is the same as cannibalism. It's a question of metaphysics.

>>
>>27199775
I like how you articulate your thoughts. We would get along well!

I'm very interested in your perspective on vegetarianism. I'd say that since we're omnivores we're not necessarily obligated to eat meat, but it makes getting the nutrients we need in our diet much more practical. That said, I think what distinguishes us from animals is our higher cognitive functioning - more developed emotions (I believe animals have basic impulses and emotions) and the ability to question why we are here. I do like the quote from Hawking I think it was, "if the universe was simple enough for us to understand, we would be too simple to understand it" or something like that. Something tells me these big questions won't ever have an answer. But that's just my $0.02.

Are you religious at all? I was brought up Christian but find myself doubting if a loving God exists because if he did a lot of the shit that happened to me and others wouldn't have, I think.
>>
>>27199208
>that palace hat

>>
>>27199893

Thank you, and we probably would get along. You seem fun to talk to.

I don't think practicality is a reason for belief, because you then get caught in utilitarianism and all the problems associated with it. If we were to go down higher cognitive functioning, it would be okay for me to go eat Joe Bloggs with downs syndrome. Generally speaking, you're correct, but if we allow one exception and not another then the theory fails. The big questions won't have an answer, but it's still fun to look.

I struggle with religion a great deal, in having read all of the shortcomings of Christianity in theology it's impossible to believe. Yet whenever I look around me at all the beauty in the world, it seems impossible for there not to be a God. The aesthetic argument, it's called, and it's awful, but so appealing.
>>
>>27200022
You're very right. I suppose I should become a vegetarian then but I'll be missing out on all that steak.

The way I look at it now is similar to you - it seems to be logical that there's a creator of some sort, but if he was truly complex enough to create the universe, could mere human minds ever fully comprehend him? Especially considering that organised religion is so different from what it used to be, I'm not very sure. I look up at the stars sometimes and feel a sense of numinous - it seems unbelievable that it all stemmed from nothing with no ultimate designer. You need to consider the Cosmological argument - a train going down a track has several carriages - each carriage is essentially attached and only functioning because of the one preceding it. There has to be one different carriage at the front driving it all along. What is that? I see it as a sort of...force? I don't know. But there seems to be something powerful turning all the cogs of the universe. I think when I take away the slightly close-minded ideals of the afterlife in Christianity and consider other options, I have a less bleak outlook on life.

This is pretty deep for Wednesday night, but I like it.

>>
>>27200248

I suppose Otto's feeling of numinous that we're talking about is more a biological need for validation in our existence rather than actual proof of a God. With the cosmological argument there are a thousand and one problems for that, most notably Hume and the inability to coincide cause and effect. It seems as if every formal argument for God fails, it is not a rational belief, but one we always come back to. Maybe that's a short coming as a species, or maybe just us as people. If there was a God, which I hope there is, then it has to be incomprehensible because if it was comprehensible then it would no longer be omnipotent etc, which is to say of course, it would no longer be a God

Very true. I recall learning of a triangle diagram in a philosophy class - one side was evil, one was omni-benevolence. and the other omnipotence. However, these three things cannot exist with eachother - if God loved us and could stop evil, there wouldn't be evil! But we know that there is evil, which leaves us with two options - God isn't all loving but is all powerful, meaning he *could* stop our suffering but chooses not to. Or, God is all loving but *not* all powerful, meaning he can't stop the evil on earth and our own suffering. Since these are the only two logical options but Christianity disagrees with both, Christianity is surely wrong (Occam's razor). And if Christianity's interpretation of God isn't right, then who knows about the rest of their teachings? Anyway, it goes without saying I wholeheartedly agree with you. I wish we could just know the answers. Why do we have to be fallible?! why are we inadvertently holding ourselves back?!

Anyway, I'm chilling reading The Martian right now. What are you doing this evening?

Yeah, Mackie's inconsistent triangle. Fun times. I think, though, if we just knew the answers life would become intolerably boring.

normie reeeeeeeeee

In all seriousness, reading a short summary of Cat's Cradle makes it seem very interesting. I enjoy books that look at society on the whole but are grounded in fiction, I'd say that's why I enjoyed I; Robot a lot too. I've been meaning to finish many books like that I started but never got around to it. I will eventually.

I think I'd like to know, simply for the "ooooohhh" factor. If we knew what the answers to life were, we could simply ask more questions. We could finally unite and join under the common cause of peace and living for betterment instead of our inherently selfish nature now. Maybe that wouldn't change. Still it's fun to think what if. It's a shame I wasn't born in a time where the answers were more clear cut, but I suppose someone has to let humanity reach that stage, don't see why I can't contribute.

I'm actually very interested in AI and Computing. I look to complete a degree in just that and one day develop some sort of self aware AI. I was talking to a psychologist the other day who reckoned that it would be impossible to create a human-like sentient being because we'd need to give it a "conscience", which is something you can't program. I find it strange that no matter how hard we try we may never create a mechanical sentient being, but after 10 minutes a guy can bust inside a girl and later raise a child that seems to have all of these things innately there. Really goes to show how infallible we are as a species.

>>
>>27201047

I enjoy books that explore a given facet of reality, the human condition, society, love, dreams or anything like that. It's interesting to see an authors own perception against yours, because they are different, and if one of you is right or are both misinterpreting the reality.

We could unite for peace, but not for betterment or progress. Human life is given purpose through striving to achieve and become better, the industrial revolution was barely more than 100 years ago for gods sake. If we knew all the answers, there would be no place to go. I'd rather contribute to the solution than be there to find it.

Your psychologist is wrong. Consciousness is a purely physical thing, Gilbert Rylie (or however it's spelt) talked about the 'Ghost in the Machine' and how it's a category error to talk about consciousness as separate from the brain. It's not a by product, just our way of experiencing it. It should be entirely possible to recreate a human brain, we just don't know enough yet due to the overwhelming complex it is. One day though. Maybe you'll be that person, even.

The Coincidence Detector fired up on this author. This means you are reading a Jewish poet, which might be harmful to your mental and national health. Recommended cure:
1) Read "Culture of Critique" by Kevin McDonald
2) Read "Will to Power" by Nietzsche
>>

Heh I wish. I just want to die and be remembered at least, for my legacy. We can only achieve so much in life. A saying goes: "There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that time in the future when your name is spoken for the last time." I don't want to die a third time.

You've given me a pretty insightful outlook at life today that's much different from my own. We need more people like you in society. Anyway it's been fun. I'll see if I can recognise you in another thread sometime. Maybe one like this where I'd post a rate chart again. Would be interesting to talk to you again. I'm off to bed. A pretty light-hearthed, comical poem. I guess it's fun. Do you mind if i share a poem? It's from a normie left-wing Swedish poem that the establishment currently likes for some reason (translated to English):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xY0SXeXylc
Swedish reading

English Version:
The dead one
Doesn't remember anything
Of his life
Not why she ran off the road
Not how the snowflake landed in her outstretched hand
And everything dissapeared
The city dissapeared
The gas lanterns were blown out
for good
The fountain in the park stopped
In the middle of its fall
The cafes shoved away
like a wave
One hit with the reins
and the horse-wagon splintered
and dissapeared
The streets dissapeared
The mass of people dissapeared
Everything dissapeard
Dragged in its claws and dissapeared
Dissapeared

>>27201935
Typical sister-poster, i see. I have never heard a single positive reason for why it is a shitty compilation, simply had it asserted for me multiple times by Nietzsche 101 type people. Even if it is a "shitty" compilation, even if Nietzsche didn't write a single line of it, it's ideas are simply too profound to be ignored.

>>27201978
None of these i have heard of. I don't really read poetry, but you can see some stuff up there i usually read. Do you have a good poem by any of them to share?

>>
>>27202096
Try reading the rest of Nietzsche (all of it) and then you might contextualise where that profundity comes from.
>>
>>27202122

>Try reading the rest of Nietzsche (all of it) and then you might contextualise where that profundity comes from.

You're probably a (((Kaufmann)))/Foucault/other left-nietzschean Nietzschean, right? (((Kaufmann))) and other left-nietzscheans couldn't ignore his works, so they sought to distort them and claim them for their own instead as to not make them so dangerous to leftism. Left-nietzscheanism is a contradiction in terms, which you will see if you read his works in the original german or in a translation by the old nietzscheans like Ludovici.

See, this makes me think you misunderstand anarchism at a very fundamental level. Do you think we're all primitivists or something? Because that's a small trend in modern anarchism that is largely laughed at and ignored (rightfully so).
>>
>>27208920
You see, Anarchism is more of a philosophy than political standpoint. We start as small community, it's hard to see it as an American because it totally goes against our culture. Theoretically, mankind will be inclined to invent or discover things to make life easier for the community as well as themselves. The Native Americans are an example. They lived in communities, had no printed money, no prisons, and did their duties for the fellowship of their tribe.

>>27208967
To be honest if anarchism worked It would be great, but I just don't think it would.

>must conclude that the question "are libertarians anarchists?" simply cannot be answered on etymological grounds. The vagueness of the term itself is such that the libertarian system would be considered anarchist by some people and archist by others. We must therefore turn to history for enlightenment; here we find that none of the proclaimed anarchist groups correspond to the libertarian position, that even the best of them have unrealistic and socialistic elements in their doctrines. Furthermore, we find that all of the current anarchists are irrational collectivists, and therefore at opposite poles from our position. We must therefore conclude that we are not anarchists, and that those who call us anarchists are not on firm etymological ground, and are being completely unhistorical.

You're like the result of the alternative path i could have taken a few years ago. But instead i decided to drop vidya, start lifting and stop talking to people so much. It's only recently i have begun to talk more to people again.

No nietzsche, though? How far into the philosophical canon are you? The only thing which is disagreeable are your politics,
You seem like my kind of girl, desu. I'm Chad Thundercock with glasses and books, by the way. Also an evil nazi.
>>
>>27206242
Can you give me any books that you think are great criticisms of capitalism/national socialism/fascism/libertarianism? I am sympathetic to all of those ideologies and non-sympathetic to anarchism, but i want to be sure i have the right set of beliefs so i want to read my "enemies" too.
>>
>>27207612
You just need to be slightly more right politically, and you will be red-pilled.
>>
>>27207791
My kind of person, to be absolutely honest close family. What nonfiction do you like to read?
>>
>>27207841
You're on your way to be redpilled. All you need to do now is to go post-libertarian. You can do this by reading Nietzsche.
>>
>>27211232
What can i do to improve? I am most definetively not iron pill. In the philosophical canon, i am terribly far behind. Which means i haven't even had time to read Evola yet. I tried to, but then i saw that he made multiple references to authors i had not read yet.

I remember this game from back in 2008 or so (maybe not? My past is floating together into one big achronological mush). Since i was a kiddo at that time, i didn't really have much luck playing it, but you have a very good taste in video games just for this game alone. The hl2 mod insurgency, right?

I usually fuck around in Garry's Mod but it's easily not one of my favorites
a few years ago I used to play The Hidden religiously but my computer bit the dust and I never redownloaded it

also, for what it's worth, I'm using a shitty intel integrated GPU and insurgency runs fine, just lower the settings on it

Can you summarize your theology? I am an atheist, but i really really like calvinist theology.
>>
>>27212827
In short story i believe that people can reach heaven by refraining from sin and following the 10 commandments and then undergoing hard fasting, refraining from sex and figuratively crucifying themselves (or the beast if you will) on the cross in long meditation.

So for the record, a 5/10 would be average. Meaning you'd fuck the same amount the average person does. The average person has had sex. You're not near average.

I like philosophy and religious non-fiction as well as some autobiographies.

Favorite philosophers are the Greeks, some continental and a lot of Eastern.

In terms of autobiographies, any historical figure that I admire. I recently read Benjamin Franklin's and it was really good, I'd recommend it if you haven't already.
